Trading for him without intention of giving him a new contract just isn't going to happen. No one is going to "rent" a hold out. I like Harvin, he's a Hampton Roads kid like me, but it's not in the cards for the Texans. And as much as I've been harping for a new receiver for two years, his inability to stay off the injury report is more than troubling. Beyond games, he's sat out of more practices than any active player I can think of off the top of my head. As for as the rotten corps in general....I find that I keep landing on the same root issue. Kubiak and his system. He values blocking and ST contribution more than he seems to care about finding flat out good receivers. Won't play guys until they've got the blocking and/or ST part down. I just don't see him grabbing a fly route type or a playmaker. I see him grabbing another possession receiver like Walter. And even if Rick Smith grabs vertical guys "behind his back" - are we ever going to see Kubiak line up 3 wide? Not his sneaky trips left/run right play, but call an honest to god spread on 3rd and long? I know it's pessimistic and cynical and bitter old man of me....but I keep wondering if we're locked into this scheme and it goes beyond our personnel. It's a passing league, and we're working a 90s run-centric O.
If you don't sign him to a long term contract, then you would have a disgruntled WR on your team. We already know what type of pain in @# he can be.
Not necessarily - you could always franchise him. That's why I favored them trading for Dwayne Bowe last year, and why people were wrong to characterize it as a one-year "rental." Bowe would have netted the final however-many games of last year plus, by franchising him, you get him for all 16 games in 2013, too. I think you can take the same approach to Harvin - though, dealing for him in the offseason makes the situation more difficult, IMO - I doubt Bowe would have sat out games (and game checks) if traded mid-season, especially with a chance to make the playoffs.
The last Cap numbers that were out said the Texans are around $8 million under the cap. The Texans have their own free agents that they would like to resign (Glover Quin, Connor Barwin, Brice McCain, James Casey, Donnie Jones, and additional veterans to sign to fill out the roster). To make this work the Texans have to restructure contracts. If you trade for Percy Harvin and sign him to a new contract, now we are cutting out key members of the roster to make it work.
So I dont get it, you want a 2nd round WR that could be inmediate contributor, but then in other post, you say thats the position that takes the longest to develop? I dont get it, if it takes the longest time to develop, why not just getting a WR that is already developed and ready to play. why waste another year?
