This hasn't been published yet, but I got it from Michael McCann's page (leading sports lawyer). It's very interesting. McCann thinks Stern should compensate us if White leaves the team this season.

Man this guy can't write worth a damn. His logic seems flawless and his topic is interesting, but if I submitted something written like that in my field my boss would have my head.

+1 on the first round pick if Royce White doesn't get his act together. That would be amazing.

So, that`s good news I guess. We have a way out of this mess?

But one more question about White: is it really his fear of flying that`s causing all of this? I thought we were over that (so him taking the bus to closer games, skipping SOME road games until he gets comfortable with it and just playing home games)

There was this soccer player, Dennis Bergkamp I think was his name, who was also afraid of flying. He was allowed to skip several road games because of his anxiety.

I´m sure you could handle the flying thing a lot better, than what is happening right now, so I am more thinking this is about hurt feelings and deeper problems.

I wouldn't mind getting a pick, but wouldn't Stern just say "Well you knew the risk in drafting him" ?

That's an Abstract (i.e. summary) of the paper. That's how they normally read.

They travel by bus in most games in the EPL, if not all.

    Obligatory Bergkamp goal:

Attorneys are taught to write like idiots in law school. If you try to buck the system, professors and law review don't approve. It's pure regurgitation of precedent, fact, assumed-fact, and lengthy citations - garbage in, garbage out.

I'm talking about the entire document itself, not just the abstract. Maybe in the sciences publication is different, but this reads much more like a term paper for English 101 and a lot less like a paper for a peer-reviewed journal...

My thought as well. I don't see what could possibly push Stern to provide a compensatory pick.

If I recall correctly, following Len Bias' death, not only did the Celtics not get a compensatory pick, they had to continue to count Len's salary against the cap. Granted that was a long time ago, but still...

Nice find and repped. I look forward to reading the whole paper. I think a few of the comments in this thread miss the point that this is an academic paper in a journal discussing the hypothetical outcomes of a legal suit between Royce and the Rockets and the NBA.
