To be fair, 450 years ago when Paterno was born, they would've just chalked it up to be "love".

    I have a couple questions:

Did any of the officials know any details outside the allegation the grad assistant made in 2002?

What was the extent of the relationship between those who knew of the allegations (e.g. Paterno) and Sandusky after that point? Still buddy-buddy?

I think the media and most people are focusing on the wrong things: Joe Pa and his coaching tenure, what happens Saturday: it is not about football or the future of Penn State football.

BUT We still do not know the identity of the first kid from 2002. We arent focusing on the victims enough and how they are and have coped with this. And how the freak still go on despite this being reported to the AD (how is Sandusky still allowed on campus is beyond me!!!)

It is amazing to me that this could happen at a public school, where parents entrust their kids, ON CAMPUS!

This act is truly a disgrace. Sandusky needs to put into jail and rot, maybe have the same thin happens to him in jail.

Didn't this shower incident happen in 2002? Did Paterno have knowledge that Sandusky was a pedophile/sex offender before 1999?

The campus police force was investigating him as early as 1998 - during which time he was supposed to be Joe's apparent successor-in-waiting, followed by him allegedly turning down multiple HC jobs and abruptly retiring in 1999.

    edit: here's the timeline:

it's going to be a PR nightmare for PSU having Paterno on the sidelines ever again.

My instinct is sympathy for JoePa. My instinct is that he will be unfairly pushed to tarnish his illustrious legacy by being forced out, and that he will be paying for the mistakes of someone else, and instinctually this feels unfair. Maybe it's because I'm a Buckeye, and have some nostalgic attachment to Paterno's legacy. It's selfish I guess but it's hard for me to hold JoePa accountable for things someone else did. I understand the chain of command thing. I still feel bad for the guy.

Then I think about the reality of the accusations, and they are so vile, so disgusting, so damaging, that it doesn't even really matter how I feel about Paterno. He's not my grandfather. This isn't pay-to-play or some recruiting ethics dilemma. This behavior, unfortunately, is so disturbing that they all have to be made examples of. This can NEVER happen again.

Just disgusting stuff. Too hard to think about about.

Holy crap I had no clue it was that bad in terms of how many times these incidents were seen and reported. How in the world did it take this long for everything to come out?

And does anyone really believe Sandusky wasn't doing this before 1994? It's almost impossible to believe that he wasn't messing around with the boys between 1977
(when he started The Second Mile program) to 1994.

    Paterno full statement:

STATE COLLEGE, Pa., Nov. 9, 2011 -- I am absolutely devastated by the developments in this case. I grieve for the children and their families, and I pray for their comfort and relief.

I have come to work every day for the last 61 years with one clear goal in
mind: To serve the best interests of this university and the young men who have
been entrusted to my care. I have the same goal today.

That's why I have decided to announce my retirement effective at the end of
this season. At this moment the Board of Trustees should not spend a single
minute discussing my status. They have far more important matters to address. I
want to make this as easy for them as I possibly can.
This is a tragedy. It is one of the great sorrows of my life. With the benefit
of hindsight, I wish I had done more.

My goals now are to keep my commitments to my players and staff and finish the
season with dignity and determination. And then I will spend the rest of my
life doing everything I can to help this University.

Holy crap. So he admitted to showering in 1998, was investigated by the police, promised never to do it again, and somehow got away with no damage. And then both in 2000 and 2002, incidents are reported to Penn State and nothing happened? Everyone who knew anything has to go, and they have to go immediately.

Ummm, they absolutely should discuss you - and fire you today. Finish out the season? Absurd.

If the Penn State board had any dignity, they'd fire them all now.

I guess they can say they're preserving their legal position by moving more slowly and allowing the macabre spectacle of Joe's shameful 4-game retirement tour to conclude, which really isn't the best outcome for anybody, himself included.

Anybody with an ounce of sanity wouldn't let him near the PSU sidelines this weekend. This is already bad enough. Like Sam said, don't turn it into some retirement tour spectacle. That will only make it worse for everyone.

Agree with what Major said --Everyone who knew anything about this and/or were involved in any way MUST GO now and deserves what's coming to them. Disturbing & disgusting.

How this guy continually got access to Penn State(and facilities and later a HS) is just...wow.

This is a preemptive strike, that should fail. If they want to show him a little dignity, Paterno should be "placed on leave immediately because of the ongoing investigation".

Agreed. I have nothing against Joe Pa, but this cannot go overlooked. Such a shame that this happened for so long. He reported it to the AD but certainly should have done more. Clean house, honor the victims somehow, and start over.
