sucks if we'd have to give up Pence and Wandy to get Peavy. That leaves us with a hole in the rotation to plug still (since Wandy is currently penciled in as a 2 or hopefully a 3), except now we'd have spent a lot of the money we would have had otherwise (for a FA) on Peavy..
Astros are one starting picher from being a contender but they cant handicap their team for it. We have a limited farm house I dont think we can pull something off.
McTaggart's view: Who would you trade for Padres ace Jake Peavy? The Padres are reportedly shopping ace Jake Peavy, and you can bet the Astros, along with everyone else in baseball, will place a call to San Diego. The Padres reportedly want two pitchers and a center fielder, so I don't see how he'd wind up with the Astros in a trade. He and Roy Oswalt are close friends, but they would have to trade Oswalt to the Padres to get Peavy. I just can't see a package the Astros could put together to get Peavy. Don't tell me Michael Bourn, Wandy Rodriguez and Brad James in exchange for Peavy. Not anywhere good enough. Start with Hunter Pence, throw in the top two pitching prospects and that probably still won't get it done, considering the top pitching prospects are low in the minors. Feel free to share your ideas. The Padres will get several terrific offers for Peavy, so I can't imagine the Astrso being able to put a package together to get him. But this is pretty rare. A top pitcher who's under contract for the next few years and is available via trade. Let the trade winds start blowing. Link We just don't have enough to make this happen. Peavy reportedly gave a list of 5 teams he'd be willing to go to so the Astros aren't his only choice. Apparently, the Braves were one of them and they have a far, far better farm system, as does every other team that will make a bid. The only thing that could help our cause would be Peavy rejecting all the better deals offered to the Padres. Even if he did that, which is unlikely, then the Padres probably won't trade him this offseason.
Definitely a long shot. San Diego pitcher Jake Peavy, the Cy Young Award winner currently being dangled in trade talks, initially indicated to the Padres that he would prefer a deal to one of five teams -- Atlanta, St. Louis, the Chicago Cubs, the Los Angeles Dodgers and Houston Astros. But because San Diego apparently isn't close to honing in on a deal with any of those five, sources say that the Padres are reaching out to other teams, as well. Peavy, 27, has a full no-trade clause, and he has not given San Diego any indication that he would accept a deal to the Yankees or any other American League team. But the Padres are in the process of gauging interest from those clubs, as well -- and if they were to identify an offer that they find acceptable, perhaps for a couple of pitchers and a center fielder, officials with other teams sense that San Diego would move quickly to complete a deal. The Braves are probably the best-equipped team among those named by Peavy to complete a deal. They have young pitching, such as Jair Jurrjens and Tommy Hanson, and center fielders Jason Heyward and Jordan Schaefer. Officials with the two clubs have exchanged names, but to date, the Braves have been reluctant to talk about Hanson, Heyward, Schaefer or any of their best prospects. Peavy is attractive for his performance and because he's under contract through 2013. He is set to make $8 million in 2009; $15 million in 2010; $16 million in 2011; and $17 million in 2012. He also has a 2013 option for $22 million, with a $4 million buyout. The Yankees, who will seek at least two starting pitchers this offseason, have discussed Peavy internally, but Peavy has been open in his preference to play in the National League -- where he can hit and run the bases -- and some friends of the pitcher wonder if he would like playing in New York. Pence, Wandy, Valverde... trade whoever it takes to get the job done. Jake Peavy is that good. The Stros will regret it if they don't act.
Now everyone go re-read the LaTroy Hawkins & Randy Wolf threads. Especially you. Yep, you, right there.
I've ask before and I'll ask again, since this story is picking up steam. Who besides Oswalt is untouchable?
Peevey has a no-trade clause in his contract. He can actually force a trade to the Astros if this is where he realy wants to go by veto(ing) any other trade proposals.
i'd like to think pence, castro, and our best pitching prospect could do it.... this would be an artest like move for the astros.
not really pence as established himself as at least an average player with signs of borderline all-star. if rockets gave up battier in the artest deal i'd agree. comes down to how bad peavy wants out of SD and if the padres really really want to save the money. Pence, Wandy, Castro, and young mediocre pitcher would probably do it... all cheap all relatively young and 2 have proven they are at least average mlb players. question is would the astros want to make a hole in RF for an upgrade of wandy while losing their best catching prospect.
to lock down one of the top 5 starting pitchers for the next 5 seasons? if they didn't want to do that, they're not real bright.
see, i think this is more likley. i think valverde has to be included, and maybe it would be a 3 team deal...or SD would just find a place to unload valverde at some point. but i think it's going to take that sort of deal to bring over a guy in peavy's class.
