so this is something that has been kind of annoying but not too big a deal...but figured might as well see if i can't find a solution.

every so often when i boot up my computer, the main windows desktop will load but i wont be able to click on any icons or start menu....so i'll have to manually shut down the PC then when it boots up again it normally works just fine.

    any ideas?

A failing hard drive will sometimes cause weird Windows errors like this. Sometimes a virus will too. Would do a virus/malware scan and hard drive health scan when you have a chance.

Does this happen when you boot in safe mode? Try booting in safe mode and see if it happens. It sounds like your explorer is crashing. How often does this happen? What version of windows are you running?

If this is a company computer, or you usually login to a domain, sometime it gets stuck when network is down. However, it shouldn't stay stuck for more than a couple of mins.

Upgrade to SSD can drastically decrease boot time.

    answer a few questions..

    i am running windows 7

    it is a SSD....its a newer computer build...about a year old

i havent tried booting in safe mode...

umm..how frequent...it depends...i guess if i just left my computer on all day it'd be fine...but i tend to shut my computer down when i'm not going to use it for awhile so sometimes i boot up 2-3 times a day. usually it might happen once out of those 3x.

edit: ran a malware program and anti virus...both found nothing

Check your startup programs and disable any that you dont absolutely need.

Take your hard drive out and place it in ice cold water. This will ensure that the disk will cool down. Then put some magnets on it to draw out the ions.
