I said Starcarft does? Well, your question was "no mention of the Fallout series at all?" He mentioned Fallout 3 as already being on his original list. Someone else mentioned it later. So, yes, there was mention. As for 1 & 2, I'm guessing once you release "3", it's going to be hard to hide that there was a "1" & "2". I wasn't trying to jump on you at all, it's just that this was a thread about games maybe people hadn't heard of much, but as usual, people end up derailing threads with whatever conversation they think the thread is about. It ends up being a thread about "my favorite games ever!". lol. But it's cool, sorry if you thought I was jumping on you - I wasn't.
I didn't really mean to put any strict guidelines on what should be posted. I was just wanting a list of some good PC games to play, preferably games I don't know about. I threw in the comment about lesser-known games since I've probably played or know about the major PC games already (StarCraft, AoE, Diablo, Fallout, Oblivion, etc.). I expected that it would be difficult to have a thread for that though (who knows what games I've played or know about?). It doesn't seem like there is much discussion about PC games in the Hangout though, so I felt like it wouldn't hurt if things got a bit off-topic in this thread...assuming they at least stayed on the discussion of PC games of course. edit: I forgot about this: Great news. I've been wanting to play Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis for a long time.
I just thought of an old game that is still kind of fun to spend some time on. Try Outlaws by LucasArts. It is very old. It was designed for Windows 95. So if you are using Vista you will have to use the compatibility mode to play it. If for no other reason play it to hear the music. It is absolutely the best music for any video game I've heard. The composer did a top notch job. It may not be as impressive if you aren't familiar with the old Spaghetti Westerns.
No problem at all - I knew you weren't. It was partially my fault anyways - I saw a lengthy discussion on Starcraft which obviously is a well known game. And the OP did mention Fallout 3 but I normally figure "1" and "2" as unknowns. Either way, I see what you are saying
Several days old now, but The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall is available for free on Bethesda's site: http://www.elderscrolls.com/downloads/downloads_games.htm If you guys haven't checked it out before, I recommend it (assuming you like Morrowind, Oblivion, Fallout 3, etc.). It is definitely not as good in some areas, and way more buggy IIRC, but still lots of good stuff. Some things haven't even been brought back in later games (e.g., buying a ship). Plus, the world is MASSIVE! In related news, MechWarrior 4 is supposed to be released for free as well: http://battletech.catalystgamelabs....ior-to-be-distributed-free-on-battletech-com/ Finally, as a reminder (this was posted earlier), Steam has some LucasArts games online now. I checked out Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis a bit last night.
MechWarrior 4 is supposed to be released for free because the new Mechwarrior is rumored to be under development. Daggerfall is a game I never played, but its map size dwarfs Morrowind or Oblivion from what I recall. I don't know if this translates into a feeling of being bigger or not.
A new MechWarrior isn't really rumored anymore. It was confirmed around the same time as that announcement: http://pc.ign.com/articles/100/1002164p1.html http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MechWarrior_(reboot) Should have mentioned that in my post, but I was thinking only about older games at the time. Looking at Wikipedia, it has Daggerfall at ~64K square miles, compared to the 16 square miles of Oblivion. As you would expect, the more recent games definitely had more to do (per square mile?), not to mention the quality was a lot better. Much of Daggerfall is randomly generated, so you end up seeing the same stuff over and over more or less. Not to mention there are vast areas of...nothing. Still lots of fun though, and the size does have some benefits (different climates, lots of people, etc.). Been a while since I've played it, so I've probably forgotten some of the more subtle things.
Pretty cool. Not sure how many more games are going to be released for free. Just read this article. http://www.cnbc.com/id/31832532
I picked up the new Monkey Island games today, and just bought Grid for $14. Looks like a fun racing game.
If you guys like games like the Caesar series/empire building, I just downloaded a demo of a game that's been getting pretty good reviews called "Dawn of Discovery" (PC version). I'm not sure I'm hooked on it, but it seemed interesting enough to play for a while at least. I'm on the fence with regard to buying it after playing it briefly. Just finished the First Chapter of Tales of Monkey Island. GREAT stuff. Love it. Sad I have to wait for the next chapter next month. Grid is a FUN game too, I have NO IDEA how I've never heard of it before!
I remember reading a similar article a while back. I don't even really care if they're free or not. Price them at $5-$15 or so (like the LucasArts games on Steam), and I'll be happy. Don't know why more publishers don't do this. Granted, I suppose a lot of older games are already readily available for free, but I'm sure a decent amount of people would still pay money for a legal version. I saw some stuff about the Anno games a while back. Might check out this latest release sometime in the near future.
I hope you've played X-Com: UFO Defense. I played it for PS1, but it was a PC game first, and that is most certainly one of the best games ever made in my book. How did all the interviewing go, anyway? Get a job yet?
Haven't played it yet, but I got most of the X-Com games from the 2K Mega bundle on Steam a few weeks ago. I'll get to it eventually. Maybe after Okami and SOTC. I accepted an offer from a local Austin company back in April (I think?), and I've been working there since late May (right after I graduated). I'm really enjoying it so far. Good company, great people, nice location, learning some cool stuff, etc. Pretty happy about how things turned out.
Very much seconded. I only forgot about it because I have a... err... PIRATEd version rather than a physical copy. Yaaaar game pirates! Waitwaitwaitwait. Wait. You haven't played Okami yet? Dude. I'm so disappointed in you. But seriously, I'd put UFO Defense on par with Okami, it's really that good. Those 2 are top-10 games on any system ever, no doubt in my mind. None. In fact, they're both probably top 5. And you know I've played a lot of games... ...sweet! And now, you have a bigger budget for games! Haha. Seriously, my game-buying has gotten insane. I own 150+ console games at this point. Plus my current girlfriend eggs me on, because I got her way into playing FF7, Okami, Romance of the Three Kingdoms 7, Resident Evil 5, and pretty much any decent game that has co-op.
Pirates was part of that bundle too. In fact, there were a lot of must-play games in that bundle. I'll be getting to it soon hopefully (got it from the SonyStyle deal that was/is going on). I've probably already bought more games in the last month or two than the last few years combined. Of course, most of those have been PC games. Probably been averaging $10-$15, thanks to some of the crazy deals at Steam, GamersGate, etc. And I just noticed that Newegg has Prince of Persia for $8 and DMC4 for $10 too. Hmm...don't know if I should try those out on the PS3 instead though.
I learned the hard way - never buy a game on console if it is available on PC - *unless* it is a port of a console game. If it's originally a console game, then stick with the console version. And buying console ports of PC games has not ever been very satisfactory either. Honestly though, this personal rule was established back back before these latest-generation consoles, and the poor graphics capabilities on consoles versus PCs at that time was a large part of the reason, as was processing power. So now, for me, any kind of strategy games or FPS games (even as good as some FPS games are on consoles), air combat simulators, you just can't beat the keyboard/mouse combination. A handheld game controller just is not going to be as good. And of course, any kind of MMO like WoW or CoH/V, Second Life, that just isn't going to work on a console at all. And I wonder about games like Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter Nights and Dungeon Seige, if they could possibly work and be anywhere near as good on a console. By the same token, the twitchy action games like fighting games, 3rd-person action games (Tomb Raider, Uncharted), driving games, 'hybrid' games, sandbox games, there are a lot of new kinds of games that work so well on consoles now, it would never feel right on a PC. Something like Infamous or Drake's Fortune, I can't imagine trying to play those on a PC now. Those two you mention, PoP and DMC4, I would bet you good money that it is a better experience on the consoles than on the PC.
