Because Lin and Lowry made 8 million and Beverley made 900k... In Hindsight you would rather have Lowry than Dwight, but we would have never known this back then.
Lowry will choke out Harden if it were to boil down to who is the actual leader of the game. The problem with our team is that we have no one with the balls to step up to Harden when his game is struggling and demand that he starts playing off the ball more and when I say off the ball, I mean looking to get open as well as chances to slash like he did in OKC.
You would think after the Lawson debacle that people would realize you need to play Bev or Bev-like PGs next to Harden. Getting another playmaking/ball dominant point guard to come in and stand over in the corner while Harden dribbles for 15 seconds would be stupid. Either Harden is the man on this team and you surround him with shooters who can play defense, or you get rid of Harden and change the system. There is only one ball, and as long as he is on the team, it is going to be in Harden's hands most of the time. To complement that, you need four guys that play off the ball and can space. Since Harden also plays no defense, you need all four other guys to be elite defenders to essentially be able to play 4 on 5 for most of the game.
Problem is you need another playmaker that can penetrate and dish the ball. And you're paying Beverley $6m/yr, Ariza $8m/yr and Brewer $8m/yr. in essence, if you play a Beverley, you need more playmaking from Ariza or Brewer. Or their position or roles. good luck moving Ariza without collapsing our D even further, or Brewer without attaching a 1st round pick (which is probably not enough).
I think this opinion carries a lot of bias the problem with the Lawson debacle was he wasn't very good. in the short time Beasley has been here he has had no problem finding opportunities for shots, and has created much of that offense on his own in the same system. I would entertain that the system has inherent flaws, and needs the proper personnel to flourish...but I wouldn't put that on James' shoulders.
How did Lawson go from our star recruit, 3rd big 3 on $12m/yr contract to not ve ry good to begin with?
Sure do wish we'd kept Kyle [he says for the millionth time]... Or Shaun [ditto]... I think Bev would be a good backup PG. I don't care for some of his antics, but I like his passion, rebounding, and hustle. He makes open 3s most nights. I'd like a PG who would turn Harden into a true SG-- put Haren in his place. The Greek Freak would be nice. A long dude who could cover some of Haren's defensive mistakes, run 1/2 PnRs (heck, run 1/anyone PnRs), and take some of the creating burden off of Haren. In other words, I'd like to never see another no-look pocket-pass to Dwight's toes going the other way for a showtime dunk. Please God, my eyes...
You can't play a playmaker next to Harden, because Harden is ball dominant. Clearly Brew is not an $8m/yr player and at his current level is not really a fit in any system. Beas is good in his role of bench scorer, but can't really play big minutes with Harden. Ideal fit next to Harden would be guys like Kawhi Leonard, Anthony Davis, and Tim Duncan, but they can play with anyone. Ariza and Bev are great fits with Harden. Howard was but is in decline. DMo works fine with Harden, though his post skills are wasted if we are not feeding him on the block. Brewer, Bev, and Ariza are largely not called on to make plays. I think a Bev, Harden, Ariza, DMo, and X lineup can work very well, but the X has to be a center that can work the pick and roll with Harden, hit consistently from at least mid-range if not from three, and patrol the paint at a level at least on par with current Howard. One of the Gasols could fit, for example, or maybe LMA. Duncan a couple of years ago would be perfect. If Smoove could play consistently at the level he did in the playoffs last year, he would fill that role superbly, plus his passing skills would be very helpful.
Lowry was traded for the lottery pick that we used for James Harden. Even with hindsight you do the deal 100% of the time. I dunno how Presti feels about it though...
I think Lowry >>>> lottery pick. However we did get harden, but I think Toronto is glad it made that trade.
I'll revitalize this thread after Game 1 today. Patrick Beverly is garbage. We should not have kept him.
And? Howard is pretty bad himself. Of course, howard does get more respect because he once was a great player, until he lost his mind.
