Duplicitous liars, schemers, and backstabers don't tend to limit those character faults to one aspect of their life.

If someone can look me in the eye, and talk about family values while cheating on their wife, I deem them infinitely more likely to look me in the eye while they are screwing me over in the figurative sense.

If you have no compunction about double dealing on the person you've chosen to spend your life with, how much is it going to bother you to do the same to some schmuck of a constituent that you've never even met before for personal gain?

I guess we've gotten to the point that people are surprised if politicians AREN'T lying scumbags, which is kind of sad.

 

People fall in and out of love all the time, and executing an expedient and agreeable divorce decree has social and financial obstacles that both sides accommodate or exploit based on their priorities. That logistic misalignment between connecting emotionally with a new partner and separating materially and legally from an old one means adultery is more inevitable and widespread than to be indicative of a person's character or principles in other matters.

 

Saying that people cheat on spouses because it's more convenient than being honorable doesn't suggest that a person would have higher character or principles in other matters. It just suggests that they are happy to screw people over whenever it's in their best interests.

 

It doesn't suggest anything, human affection and coupling does not entail the same motivation, outcomes or stakeholders as other activities and people are fully capable of shaping and applying different ethical parameters to different arenas of their life.
