Maybe I'm feeling a little ranty, but the internet password regimen is out of control. I'm sick of these insignificant web services thinking they need Fort Knox security. 8 characters isn't enough. They want 10 characters, including 1 upper and 1 lower case letter, a number, and a special character. What for? So no one can break into my kid's elementary school account? So they don't hijack my subscription to Consumer Reports? If you don't handle bank account data, credit card transactions, email, or personal data, you're only entitled to password123.
I feel ya. I need to start using this, because I have to reset passwords all the time. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Password_Safe
I agree Esp since on average I think we have 10 or more Passwords and that is on the low end If you have more than one back Every Credit Card Work accounts emails facebook twitter instragram I think i have like 5 email accounts alone Rocket River
I bet you we can guess JuanValdez's cfnet password now. Sounds like it's an easy one to remember and type. I'm going with his wife's first name.
I hate it when they don't allow special characters. My go to password involves a special character, so when they don't allow it (for reasons I can't fathom) it screws me all up.
http://www.explainxkcd.com/wiki/index.php/Password_Strength Very insightful XKCD about passwords and how flawed the thinking towards them are.
I use Lastpass with premium membership for 10 bucks a year and it is the best thing ever. Saves myself all the headache of remembering passwords and all the autofill features are great too.
Just at my job alone I have about 15 different applications that require a user id/password. And of course each has different requirements for both.
The differing requirements for every website is what bothers me as well. Half the time I remember whichever websites specific rules I'm at right as I lock out my account. I wouldn't mind them all requiring complex passwords as long as there was a consistent standard for requirements.
I also use Lastpass. That said, passwords in general are antiquated, inconvenient for end-users, often insecure (unless combined with other good security measures) and need to die. We need something better to catch on with the masses and make passwords obsolete.
I did some work at a place like that. And a big percentage of the people had a password list in their top drawer. A few had them stickied to the monitor!
I thought about using LastPass and then they got hacked. lol. I swear they got hacked about a week after I thought about using them. Anway, use a password manager like KeePass, JuanValdez. What are you? Some kinda old fart? I've gotten to the point I use non-sensical passwords for pretty much everything and they're at least 20-25 characters long.
