All I have to say... Why don't more people complain about poverty or something? To start a crusade over this is terrible.

Actually whitey has a stranglehold on the physics profession:
Copernicus, Aristotle, Galileo, da Vinci, Einstein, Hooke, Newton, Feynman

All white. You are safe for now, B-Bob.

I'm surprised they even teach black history. I don't recall being taught that at my high school, but hey there were no black teachers at my high school so that's probably why. :D

Do these people just assume that a white guy can't possibly present this material accurately? If so, I can't imagine anything more racist. If they have a problem with the man slated to teach the class, fine. But if they're making a broad generalization, I can't see how it would be anything but racist.

Are Greeks really white? They seem pretty dark to me.

I don´t think the teachers skin color should matter a lick. Teaching is not about skin color. Neither is empathy.

Same type of person?  Unless the teacher owns slaves I don´t see the problem. You also have to remember that white people today Haven´t done anything wrong even if it was there grandad had slaves.

All people can be enslaved. Slavery is not something that only happened to blacks in america. There is still slavery in the world, and using your logic I´d say that someone living today who has actually been enslaved could lecture way better than your proffessor about slavery, regardless of race.

Slavery and skin color are not naturally related. It happened that way in america though.

did you ever hear about the fights about what is actually in a history Class
People still fighting to get Creationism taught in history Classs

    History is Sacred
    to alot of people

While it is easy to say Add Black History to regular history
in practice it is not so easy . . . because of politics

If Crispus Attacks is in .. . does that mean John Handcock is out?
When you start getting a more ROUNDED and not a 'MONOCULTURAL' look at history
it will take more time and understanding

I'm all for it. history and Sociology go hand and hand
Not only should we study the facts
we should study the relationships of the people

remember 50 years ago .. you would still be hearing
about the happy slave shuffling, bowing and scaping
for 'massa' . . .and they would call that accurate history

I would like to applaud b-bob for starting up a whitey rant that I normally have to start and give Mrs JB a medal for her artful expansion of the joke.

This teaching thing is stupid. While whitey can't teach about being black in this country, whitey can teach about the history of blacks in this country.

Ha ha ha! White people haven't done anything wrong eh? I wonder what the response would be like if David Duke were going to teach this class or if Louis Farrakhan tried to teach a class full of Jewish children. Even though slavery has passed every race has done some type of negative thing to another race.

I agree. Its a history course, not a how to course. I can understand Rezdawg's point, but I feel no less sympathy for the plight of Native Americans because I never had a Native American teacher.

Good to see a voice of reason...which someone else is not. And I'm talking about this thread this time, not the windshield thread :)...although I can see a recurring theme.

No offense, but that guy has as much experience with slavery as any white person. Nobody living was a slave, or has owned slaves, so I don't see what difference it makes.

My ancestors were Scottish highlanders....I've never worn a kilt.

Just because your ancestors might have been slaves, doesn't give you experience in talking about it.

If my Great Great Grandad was a Doctor, that doesn't mean I can do heart surgery.

I took an African American studies course too and the professor was black and she was one of the worst professors I have ever had. She was a nice person and all, but she was a terrible prof. It seemed like she only presented information to back up her points of view and the ones generally accepted in African American studies. The book that got me interested in taking the course was Losing the Race by John McWhorter and I mentioned that to her. McWhorter's name is not well received by most people in African-American studies because he basically rips what they say. Anyhow, when I talked to her in office hours she basically said she refused to read a book by him and that just kind of blew me away. It's not as if McWhorter was hate mongering or anything, he just makes points that criticize a lot of what goes on in African-American studies. I was hoping that McWhorter was dead wrong, but he was right and that was very disappointing to me.

Anyhow...my old, gay, white professor of pre-Civil War American history lectured very powerfully on the effects of slavery. Race should not matter if the professor is good and has a passion for the subject. I'm more than certain that my African history professor who is regarded as one of the leading African historians in the world would agree as well. He is Nigerian and the main reason he is here at UT is because of a white professor who is an African history professor.

OK I just realized how stupid that sounded. Of course white people have done things that are wrong (an enormus amount). I was trying to say that you cannot judge someone for what someone else has done. Be they black, yellow, nazi, buddhist, liberal, or of whatever group!

I will have to look this one up.
If he is like Ken Hamlin or Alan Keyes
    I can understand her concerns
