Makes me ashamed I live in Texas really. No wonder people look down at us all over the country. It's the freaking President! I swear to God when my m kids are born I'm moving to Cali or some place where they don't dumb down their kids!
He is the President of the United States of America. where am i? seriously. are we really at a point where we can not subject our children to a message from the president of the united states of america?? where did all the flag-waving go?? Your choice for president isn't in office, so you keep your kids from hearing a message from him?? What's the worst thing that could possibly happen if your kids were subjected to listening to President Obama suggest they should work hard in school? I'm not about compelling anyone to send their kids to public school or force them to listen to anything. i just can't believe this is even coming up.
Just saw this update from a friend on Facebook: WHAT!? I received a form from Garden Oaks Elementary offering to EXEMPT MY CHILDREN FROM WATCHING OBAMA's "national address to students on the importance of education" to be televised to classrooms on 9/8. PRAY TELL: What personal freedom(s) does this exemption protect? It is official: The people who are running the Republican party and its "grassroots" efforts these days are stupid ****ing assholes.
This is not a joke: Until I was in high school, my teachers had always taught me that Texas had a right to secede from the Union at any time and form their own country. This right was a requirement on the part of Texas in order to join the Union who badly wanted access to the Texas territory. Seriously.
you're saying it better and less vulgar than i am. if katy decides not to show it, i'm never giving another dime to that district and when we buy a house early next year, it won't be in katy.
Both Bush Sr. and Reagan made addresses to students, I believe. We never heard about it because no one seemed to think it was a violation of anybody's rights.
The gift of email, wireless & 24 hour news, allowing idiots to connect with other idiots and expand the horizons of idiocy. Actually Cass sunstein wrote articles about this phenomenon w/respect to the internet over a decade ago, sadly he was right
I was just pondering this yesterday. It's a little ironic that the most ignorant section of society has grown the strongest/loudest thanks to the internet and other real-time technology. Unfortunately, they still can't seem to find their way over to snopes.com
Van Jones has it right. His thoughts bear repeating, though I'm not doing that in a basso thread. When asked why Republicans had so much easier times passing controversial legislation with a smaller majority than the Democrats have now, when asked to explain the disparity, Van Jones (Obama's green jobs advisor) said, "It's because they're assholes." Now I know a lot of people here get bent out of shape about that sort of thing, but the thing is it's true. Of course, it's also true that Democrats are p*****s. But both of those facts are why schools are now sending how freaking permission slips requiring parents to proactively sign and say it's okay to watch the damn president of the US. It's because Republicans are assholes (with little to no regard for the truth, btw) and Democrats are p*****s. Republicans make noise and Democrats roll their eyes. We are going to have to be assholes too if we ever expect anything to change. Obama is getting crucified for being reasonable. It's amazing, but that's what it is. Every time he reaches out, he gets bit. Time to stop reaching out (ALL of us) and fight back until these lying, BS assholes say "Uncle."
Not only that, Bush Sr was regarding education policy. Something I'm sure second graders were most intrigued with.
And Reagan was pushing tax cuts. It doesn't matter though. This isn't a reasonable argument between groups of people who view things equally. It is an argument between p*****s who stick stubbornly to truthful arguments and assholes who are under no such obligation. Now, who do you think is gonna win?
In CA families going out of town is not an excused absence and if they miss 10 consecutive days of school for being out of town, they will be dropped from school and have to re-register, and may be assigned to a different teacher. In addition their test scores for state standardized testing become invalid. The only excusable absences are severe illness, funeral, Dr. Appointment, Family member being hospitalized, and then it's only for a certain number of days. Home schooling is allowed, though. There are certain restrictions and the CA state standards still have to be followed. Even in Texas going out of town with the family isn't excusable. When I was a Sophomore I was on the U.S. Kung-Fu team and had the opportunity to compete in China. I went to the school to ask for all my work in advance so I could get it done, and was told that if I went on the trip I would miss more than the allowed unexcused days of absence, and have to repeat the 10th grade. They all conceded that I could do the work ahead of time and that the trip itself would be very educational, but the law was the law, and so I ended up not going.
