I will. No, the ridiculous part is Faux "News" exhorting their minions to become partisan about a speech with content on which all of us agree. No, the silliness only goes one direction on this issue.
Like I said, for partisans it doesn't matter, their mind is made up. For the average voter who swings poll numbers up and down, a lot of how they decide on issues is by emotion. If a child comes home inspired by a president (which like I said, is a good thing) the day before arguably his most crucial to date national speech on health care, to me that's weird. The timing is just questionable. Putting 1 and 1 together, it looks political. And keep in mind, he doesn't even have to win any votes here, he just has to drum up support in the polls for healthcare. So, in that sense, I think it very much is political. Outside of justifications parents could have for being against it, if I were a Democrat I also would believe its just not a smart move at this point in time (given the sentiment out there that he's a crypto commie) to take something like public education, which has generally been a locally governed thing (granted Bush screwed that up with NCLB) and inject himself into it. At a point where he's pushing nationalized health care, big budget bailouts, etc. the taking on of a traditionally local enterprise is going to send people through the roof. But maybe that's what he wants, to draw out the Crazies (the Birthers, and those who post pictures of him in Red Square attire) and kind of feed off of their stupidity. Personally I don't think that will play well with Moderate voters.
You are correct and there were several pieces of legislation passed with bipartisan support but there were also several pieces of legislation that were passed strictly by enforcing partisan discipline. Consider that three of the most controversial pieces of legislation, tax cuts and dept. of Homeland Security, those were passed primarily due to Republicans sticking together and daring some moderate Dems to vote against it. Also while there were bills that were passed with both party support there were several times when the conference committee was made up of almost all Republicans and the Republicans weren't shy about using Reconciliation to shut out the Democrats.
For one I believe the school speech was scheduled well before the health care speech and as for the timing its on the day after Labor Day which for many school districts is the first day of school. What the heck is so bad about a child being inspired by the President? Whether you agree with his policies or not it is still a major accomplishment in one's life to become the President of the United States. Many of you are making this sound like its bad thing. It only seems like a bad move to you because you are against it and because of the outcry over it. As has been noted before Presidents have addressed school children many times in the past. Bush 41 did it, Reagan did it and besides a major address Presidents visit schools all the time. There is nothing unusual really about this. As for injecting himself into local governance this isn't a policy speech. This is a speech telling kids to work hard. Now if you think that a federal level politician telling kids to work hard is a violation of Federalism you have an exceedingly radical view of Federalism. Judging by the response here, albeit a very small sample, its those against it that are not playing well with moderates.
I read all your posts and you have not made one valid point, bolstered your argument or even demonstrated that you have any grasp on the concepts discussed in this thread. It's as though you had a list of talking points and are determined to post even if they do not address the posts you are quoting. What you are doing in this thread is basically "shadow debating" with an imaginary foe.
We all know Obama is known for having women randomly whip out their t*tties and as he drops the f bomb during his speeches. Surely, there is no racial element here.
via Daily kos, parts of president reagan's speech to children, nice and non-partisan: PRESIDENT REAGAN: Well, thank you very much. Please, be seated. You know, this is a real treat for me, having you here, and to have in a little while the chance to answer some of your questions. Let me also offer a special hello to those of you who are watching on C-Span, or the Instructional Television Network. Thank you for inviting us into your home or your school today ... And that is a vision that goes beyond economics and politics, it's also a moral vision, grounded in the reverence and faith of those who believe that with God's help, they could create a free and democratic nation ... Because you see, the taxes can be such a penalty on people that there's no incentive for them to prosper and to earn more and so forth because they have to give so much to the government ... There was talk about having a gun ban in California. It didn't go through. But I got a letter from a man in San Quentin Prison. And from the prison he wrote me the letter to tell me he was in there for burglary, he was a burglar. And he said, "I just want you to know that if that law goes through, here in San Quentin there will be celebrating throughout the day and night by all the burglars who are in prison."
this is so ****ing stupid. what's he gonna do, brainwash them into voting democrat, oh that's right 90% of them can't vote.
1) If being away from the BBS has taught me anything, it is that the BBS is not a good indicator of how people feel. 2) Any other day of the week, it's fine. Is he so out of control of his schedule that he could not pick two non-consecutive days to give a speech? Of course not. I mean I think you have to kid yourself to see this as just a coincidence. 3) I never said it was bad for a child to be inspired by their President. Given the timing of everything, it looks like he's trying to get people inspired for his agenda. 4) You're confusing my views for those of 2 different people I was espousing, a) the Obama is a commie type and b) the Democratic staffer who might be concerned with that view. It seems like the move (which I never said was wrong, but which is happening in a forum that is traditionally very local) just seems like a bad idea, especially when combined with the timing of the event. It's understandable while people who aren't as informed about things would be upset. Heck I'm upset for the timing reasons alone.
If he can somehow get Michael Bay to direct his speech, with some explosions and Megan Fox cleavage... then my kids would be front and center!
Now, there could be explanations... that might not be him in the pic, maybe his friend is using the account now... but he's talked about loving country music and owning a big honkey truck F150. Doesn't exactly scream "ethnic" to me.
lol. did anyone else here instantly get suspicious when some guy with "baylor" in his screen name claimed to be black?
