I think what Parcells is saying is that he doesn't have to have the title of GM, and President of the team if the guys that are in place can do the job. Parcells has said that the reason he needed those roles with the Jets, and New England was because the guys that were there before him weren't committed to winning, and didn't share his philosophy in how a team should be run. He stated that is not the case with Jerry. Jerry is very committed to winning, and also shares his philosophies on coaching. Of course in order for this to work Jerry would obviously have to give up some control. I think in order for this to work Jerry will have to allow Parcells to bring in his own staff. He will also have to allow Parcells to have complete control over all things that involve coaching. Personell moves such as the draft, free agency, and contracts would still be handled through Jerry (with aid from Parcells). It's very possible that this marrige could work.
Aren't you guys forgetting about Jerry Jones Jr. AKA Daniel Snyder? Snyder gave total control to Spurrier so it would not be surprising if Jones did the same with Parcells. Of course the relationship could sour very quickly. Why would Parcells even want to coach the Cowboys? If I remember correctly the Jets hired him away from the Patriots by giving him total control. He quit on the Jets and he'll quit on the Cowboys. Every December his name is leaked and he gets stroked on ESPN. I'd rather have Campo than a jerk like Parcells.
It is very likely that if Parcells comes to Dallas he will only be here for about 3 years. Even if that's so how on God's Green Earth can you be serious about perfering Campo to Parcells? That's like perfering to purchase a Ford Pinto over leasing a Cadillac Escalade just because you will have the Pinto longer. I would MUCH rather have Parcells for 3 years and get back to a Super Bowl than to have Campo here for another 5 years and continue to suck as bad as we do.
Quitting on a team after 2-3 years has become his M.O. as of late... but look at what he's done with those teams. Patriots: the season before he arrived they were 2-14. He turned them into playoff contenders. Jets: the season before he arrived they were 1-15. He turned them into playoff contenders. The Cowboys have a lot more talent on defense than either of the two aforementioned teams have. He could work wonders, as long as he doesn't drag Curtis Martin down to Texas with him.
He did a little more than that...the Pats went to the Super Bowl. They got all the way to the AFC Championship game and were a Keith Byars fumble away from beating Denver and advancing to the Super Bowl Parcells is more than just a football genius or a sideline genius. He is a major disciplinarian and he works his players hard in practice to the point where they are not exhausted in the 4th quarter of games. His track record of coaching demands respect from his players and rest assured, if he goes to Dallas (God I hope so), the Cowboys will right the ship within a year.
Also, if you remember, when he took the head coaching job of the Jets, it was a favor to Leon Hess. He was originally supposed to coach for a year and then step aside and let Bellichek take over. The Jets knew full well what they were getting into when they signed him.
I think you also have to look at how the franchises fared after he left. Sure he left those teams after a couple of years but he laid a foundation that helped the teams continue to win after he left (except for the Giants). Getting Parcells is the absolute best possible move Jerry could make, not only for the immediate future but also for the long term future.
I left that out purposefully. Many of Parcells pickups (Martin, Glenn, Bledsoe) were gone or not imminent producers by last year. The Super Bowl run was more about Belichick's cheap free agent romp (Antowain Smith, etc.) and his defensive scheme. Parcells laid the foundation for a perennial playoff contender, but Belichick took them the distance.
Actually the Pats DID go to the Super Bowl while Parcells was the head coach. They lost to the Packers but they still made it to the Super Bowl. Also Parcells laid the foundation for what Belichick accomplished last year. Don't for get Belichick is and has always been a Parcells guy.
