that humble location has been there at least 30 years. that is some major staying power...crazy. fun fact...the area around ponchos is famous for being haunted by poltergeists. there was a freedmans cemetery that got moved when they made the 1960 overpass over the railroad tracks. lots of activity at the movie theater that used to be there (where i saw return of the jedi!). and there was a mini-golf place/arcade called golf and games that was haunted. i didnt know that when i was a kid, but the far back area where the indoor course was always creeped me out. Humble - 1960 Over Pass Area/Train Track - The East 1960 overpass is now built over what was once a cemetery. The overpass was built to cross a set of train tracks. Workers dug up the cemetery and moved it to the woods beside it. Now It is a extremely evil area. Several business?s along the tracks have reported violent disturbances. There was a Putt Putt course along the tracks in the area that became a church, when the church would be closed in the night demonic screams could be heard from inside. The woods are very active as well, There are images seen floating through the woods as well as red lights, which are believed to be a gateway into pure evil. Humble - Old Golf and Games - This area is now a church but was abandon for years only a haven to cults and ghosts. The ghosts here are the result of being disturbed by man moving their graves. About 97 percent of every sighting in this area the ghost appear as a rotting corpse. There?s a bench just outside the building where every night there a white figure that sits on the far side of the bench. The figure is that of a human. The corpse like ghosts can also be seen in the woods across from the building wandering through the turned over gravestones and fallen church. IF YOU ATEMPT TO GO TO THIS AREA PLEASE USE EXTREAME CAUTION, THERE HAVE BEEN MURDERS AND BODIES UNCOVERED IN THE WOODS. Humble - Old Dollar Theater - This Theater is located along a area believed to be haunted by demons and demonic forces. It is part of the 1960 overpass haunting. The workers of the theater would be attacked by the evil entity. It would throw things at them and corner them with shadows. The theater was once blessed with holy water and a cross was put in the projection booth, but everyday the cross was moved from on booth to another unexplained. Some mornings the person who was opening would hear voices from the projection rooms, and footsteps outside the hall. There was one morning when the projectionist went in and found the word "SATIN" carved in the wall of projection booth 2, this booth was where most of the bang and violent attacks occurred.
the cemetery got moved just north of 1960, in the woods behind academy. we used to hang out there and smoke weed. it was super creepy though. lots of satanic graffiti and all the graves had been desecrated. some of them look like they had even been dug up at some point. when i was in high school some idiots accidentally shot a girl in the face at a party and dumped her body back there. ive always wondered if some evil presence drove them to take her body there...as if it was an offering or something. my brothers friend lived in a house behind that chuch/former golf-and-games. his whole family talked about hearing screams from inside there at night. there are a few other abandoned freedmans cemeteries around humble. ive smoked weed at most of them. i think it says a lot about panchos that its the only business around there that isnt haunted! not even satanic poltergeists will eat there!
That 2nd sentence made me laugh. Interesting about that overpass. I drive over it all the time to and from my wife's school when Townsen is backed up. Where exactly is this church you're talking about? And what is currently on the spot where the golf and games was? You can definitely get creeped out driving on Townsen at night between the Park and Ride and 1960. That weird stop sign at the corner that's there for no apparent reason. I love stuff like this.
I went to the one on 45 South back in Feb, place still feels like the late 80s/early 90s, hell I wasn't even comfortable sitting down on the chairs fearing it would break on me Food definitely is meh, but the sopapillas still on point Another throwback restaurant is Grandy's, when I went to Dallas for Wrestlemania in 2016, I geeked out when I saw it and got me a chicken fried steak meal for the nostalgic feelings
the golf and games became a church, but was abandoned for years. just looked it up on google and its now a boat/rv/trailer storage place. its a giant metal building on the east side of rr tracks and south side of 1960. there was an outdoor mini-golf course in front and another one inside in the back. the inside front was all the video games. as a kid, that was definitely THE place to be in humble in the 80's. but like i said, the back area of the indoor course always creeped me out. even during day it was really dark back there and the course had a bunch of ponds/water hazards that just added to the spooky factor. i guess it was disrespectful, but we had to be stealth about our doobie smoking. fortunately there were lots off wooded areas in humble and some of them had abandoned cemeteries! we used to go swimming in all those lakes back there where townsend cuts thru now...just north of the ramblewood subdivision. there was all this rusted out oil drilling equipment and trucks from the 30's and the earlier oil boom/moonshine hill days. pretty cool. do you live in humble ima? EDIT: im trying to remember when that panchos opened. it might have been 1984 or 85. i still cant believe its there. impressive!
The Panchos at Jones and 1960 and the Grandy's on Hwy 6 just past 290 were mainstays for me growing up. I too make it a point to find one when I'm in the Dallas area, not much I trust about Dallas, but I feel fine with Grandy's.
Kingwood, but only for the last 12 years or so. That's why I'm loving all this history. @Dave2000 I used to LOVE Grandy's. Those rolls (dipped in baked beans) were like crack. That place was a staple of my high school years.
ditto, loved the times when my mom got home from an overnight shift and brought Grandy's breakfast home with the rolls and cinnamon rolls. I lived by the one in the North Shore area, if I remember correctly, that's the the location Wanda Holloway met up with her former brother in law to plan out the hit on the other cheerleader mom
That was my grandparents favorite restaurant! Then, they closed the locations at Long Point and Jones/1960 and I've never been again
