John McClain is one of the most stubborn, egotistical writers out there. If he BELIEVES something, he will report about it as if it is fact. Wade Phillips has never expressed the desire to coach again, but McClain THINKS that he does. Therefore, he will report it as if it is true, and then when Phillips comes out and says otherwise, McClain will then say, "Well, Wade changed his mind." It's a win-win for him because he gets to act like he's in the know.

Actually, Wade will go ahead and accept a HC position...even if he doesn't want to...and even if none are offered.

That's the power of John "The General" McClain.

Did you know he has a HOF vote? And he's a movie star?

I believe most NFL contracts allow coaches to leave for an upgrade in position etc.

It's generally accepted to be poor form to not let a guy upgrade his position, yes. But I don't believe pancakes any further than I can throw him at this point.

It's an informally accepted practice. But nowhere near a given. And it's also usually more of an accepted thing for younger assistants to be given the freedom to explore opportunities to climb the ladder.

For example, if any of our divisional rivals called, I'm dead certain Phillips would not be given permission to interview.

Maybe the Texans will do something unprecedented and create co-head-coach positions. :p

Plus, that way the now cliché-ish "That's my responsibility" coaching response that's instantly used at post-game press conferences to ward off any questions about any poor execution by players will be out the window.

"That's his responsibility" will be the new "That's my responsibility."

Of course, I don't think Kubiak has had to use the "That's my responsibility" thing in about eight weeks or so... :)

if your source is his twitter post, then youre freaking reaching. mcclain was just giving his 2cents with no quotes from anyone. geez, some of you take things, and twist it all 180 degrees.

but if its more than just a falsely brought up rumor with an actually article with sources, then my bad

It probably was not even on his twitter. I bet it was something he just pulled out of his pancakes batter brain to throw onto the radio. I do not mind some things McClain says but you have to always take everything he says with a few grains of salt.

I actually believe it is merely a formality to ask for permission if you are interviewing for head coach. I don't believe a team can refuse to allow an assistant to interview for the head coaching gig.

Seriously? Why can't fat ass give us fans at least 24 hours to celebrate our first division title before telling us bad news? Seriously, how do sports writers get jobs?

No, I saw McClains twitter post, thats why Im telling the guy that hes reaching if hes basing his information off McClains post. McClain said something like this "I wouldnt be surprised if Wade was offered a HC job elsewhere, with his success this year GM's of other teams would definitely be intrigued". Somewhere along those lines, its clear that he was just hypothetically speaking.

There will be no fewer than 5 head coaching jobs open by season's end. I fear Pancakes may be right.

The difference a year makes. Sure would hate to lose him.

Kubiak: You gotta want what's best for them. They've given me everything they have.

    You are correct:
    Thanks!

I'd be furious, though, if we would be powerless to watch the Jags hire Phillips away and immediately have massive inside info on our defense.

I don't doubt that Wade wants to be a head coach. Almost anyone would, and he'd leave if given that opportunity. That said, at this stage of his career, I think he's a permanent coordinator, like Dom Capers. He might be "considered", but most of the openings that go to coordinators will likely go to someone younger with less of a track record. Someone with more "potential", so to speak.

There's a reason that McClain routinely gets real information first regarding the Texans. It's because in other times, he's willing to be used and "report" things that are clearly the agenda of certain coaches/players. My guess is that someone close to Phillips planted this seed as a way of getting Wade's name out there for potential openings. I'd be surprised if it works, though.
