I think Obama assumed the American people were smart enough not to believe in something this rediculous and didn't bother giving it the attention it didn't deserve.

Long has the GOP relied on the ignorance and fear of its constituents and so rarely are they disappointed.

Your reading comprehension is extremely bad if you think this cartoon's message is against the current healthcare reform bill.

You're confusing irrational fear with rational concern.

The Independent Medical Advisory Board already exists, it's the same group that recommended women not get mammograms until they are older.

That was just a recommendation, but the bills being considered in Congress empower the IMAB to decide what will and won't be covered, and can only be overruled by the HHS Secretary or a supermajority of Congress.

The IMAB will certainly have unprecedented powers over health matters of life and death, and the "death panel" nomer is entirely appropriate.

It is entirely appropriate, if one is willing to brave the depths of idiocy and stupidity and stare unflinchingly into their jaws, laugh haughtily, and then take the plunge, slathering one's self with a fine paste of pure moron essence - which ironically, makes one a likely candidate to have to go before this hypothetical death panel that you and your juco-reject heroine manufactured out of thin air.

It's far from unprecedented. Every private insurance company has some type of panel that makes the same decisions about what will and will not be covered.

But you aren't forced to purchase their plan, or any plan.

Wow. I can't think of a more damning indictment of the present state of the GOP than the idea that Ms. Palin could be a "king maker" in the party.

The country desperately needs a more healthy, intelligent and sane GOP than what you describe there. I know you agree.

Can we not propagate David Brooks through genetic engineering or some such?

that would make one sane, intelligent party.

I'm afraid that those who grace the board from the fundamentalist, far right/GOP side would be against it. Tinkering with Nature! ;)

    Yeah, I hear you, but:
    (1) They probably hate David Brooks anyway, and
    (2) The far left is much more likely to oppose tinkering with nature!

    Cheers and happy holidays, Deck.

And even if you purchase their plan, you're still allowed to pay out of pocket for something if you want.

You seem to be saying that a government "death panel" is bad because they can deny you coverage for something you need, but a private insurance company "death panel" is ok because you're not being forced to purchase that insurance. In both cases, you would still end up having to pay out of pocket for the uncovered procedure.

You forgot the cherry on top of his ideal universe - as an adult, when you have no insurance and go on life support, you become a ward of the state (unless you can pay for it yourself, hope you have a spare $50 million lying around). Guess who decides your end-of-life options when you are a ward of the state.

"We should not have a government program that determines if you're going to pull the plug on grandma."

    Chuck Grassley

No I am pointing out the fear based rhetoric that the GOP uses to energize the enmity of the uneducated and easily scared droves of individuals who tune in to morons like Limbaugh and Beck.

These simplified scare terms meant for a simple minded audience have a long tradition in the GOP arsenal.

W used them, Reagan, used them, McCarthy, on and on and on. The GOP knows they are effective because sadly enough people just want to hear a quick juicy soundbite instead of researching and understanding what is really going on.

You want to debate an issue THAN DEBATE IT. Don't use blatant scare tactics like "pull the plug on grandma" and "decide whether my down syndrome child will live or die."

That really isn't a rebuttal to the lie about death panels.
