this is mind-numbing. forget about who you want to win this election. this woman is soooo clearly in over her head, it's silly. i'm hearing this from republican friends as well as democrat friends. i am fascinated by the idea of her debating joe biden. i think it has the potential to be an absolute train wreck. we'll see if biden is smart enough to just shut his mouth and let her talk more...because the more she does, the better off it is for the obama/biden ticket.

Max, Joe Biden knows all this stuff backwards and forwards, so I completely agree. In my opinion, all his prep should have been aimed at doing just what you suggest... prepping Joe to say as little as possible beyond clearly answering whatever question put to him, and let Palin have the platform, along with the rope.

I think we've entered the Bizarro World of presidential election politics, rhad. I was stunned that McCain went to the extreme of sitting beside Palin and attempting to answer her questions for her. This is another example of actions by McCain that has led me to believe a man I really liked, even if I disagreed with a host of his positions on the issues, has become unfit to hold the office. I don't like having to drawn that conclusion. At least for me, it has become very hard not to. :(

The bizarro world began with Dubya. We are now at critical mass.

the palin on roe v wade video is out

    http://www.cbsnews.com/video/watch/?id=4493093n

She can't think of any specific supreme court case besides roe v wade that she disagrees with.

Her handlers need to tell her that when she doesn't know something she should just say so. I means its not too big of a deal if she can't think of a supreme court case off the top of her head, but she looks like a total idiot trying to BS her way through this answer.

    didn't that just happen?

Man what GOTCHA journalism! How dare Couric ask a VP candidate about supreme court cases she disagrees with.

The fact that someone so clueless about our nation could be in a position to lead the most powerful nation on earth is downright scary. The fact that people in this country could support a candidate like this is even scarier.

Josh Marshall makes a great point --

Not knowing any Supreme Court decision she opposes except for Roe v. Wade ain't great. Frankly, though, for the Christian right, that's really the only Supreme Court jurisprudence they want you to know. But there was a bigger goof in this latest segment from the Couric interview that I don't think got picked up in the various previews. Immediately after saying what a terrible decision Roe was, Palin got a follow-up question from Couric about whether she believes there's a constitutional 'right to privacy'.

    And Palin said, yes.

Now, narrowly speaking, you can believe in a constitutional right to privacy and also oppose Roe. But the right to privacy, as Couric says in the interview, is one of the cornerstones of Roe. And in the public debate yes or no on the right to privacy is something pretty close to a proxy for your position on abortion rights.

The bottom line is that among conservatives opposition to a constitutional 'right to privacy' is a straight-up litmus test issue. Palin not only didn't have the right answer on the right to privacy. It was pretty clear she'd never even heard of it before.

the church of Palin's that thinks the end of the world is coming. well if obama screws up big time and loses. and mccain dies or is unable to perform his duties, and palin takes over.

    END
    OF
    THE
    WORLD

seriously i suppose you would just have people advise her on every decision or she would maybe step down. but come on that woman in charge of the most powerful country in the world in this day in age. it would be interesting to watch.

How the hell did she get to be the candidate?

Did anyone from the McCain camp actually talk to her? I think it would take around a minute to know that this woman isn't close to qualified.

I thought the Gibson interview was very underwhelming to say the least but I thought that things would only get better from that point.

How much $$ does the Governor of Alaska get a year? Do you actually have to live there to be the Governor? I'm looking for a career change..

Is this for real? This woman is a numbnuts. Did McCain pick her name out of a hat? It seems like this is some WWE gimmick they're running and she'll be appearing on RAW next week.

Let's be fair to Palin - at least she didn't say that she disagreed with Lawrence vs. Texas

His point only holds true for people who are non-moralistic in their opposition to Roe v Wade. You can oppose the right to an abortion on the grounds that it is terminating of a life without opposing right to privacy. You could say that you have a right to privacy, but not at the expense of life which takes position over all.

But, all that is irrelevant. She's doing horribly in her interviews. The Couric interview is an unspinnable disaster, and I suspect that in the debate tonight she will look equally foolish on questions that go beyond the basic ones she should know well in advance are coming.

Joe's problem has never been knowledge, it's always been his propensity to exaggerate the truth and get to fired up to say what he means (or avoid saying what he means :) )

I agree though whole heartedily. If I'm an Obama strategist, I tell Biden to be clear and specific in all of his answers, but avoid getting to wound up and long winded. The less he stands out or makes an impression in this debate the better. Beat it into his head that his performance tonight can't win Obama any votes, but if he goes crazy and makes up some bogus story or gets too passionate, he could easily make headlines about himself instead of Palin.
