Nothing. If he wants to act like an insensitive, small-minded douche, it's his loss. I can't stop him.

Pakistan will not repeal blasphemy law – govt minister

Pakistan will not repeal its controversial blasphemy law but may amend it to prevent abuse because scrapping the legislation could fuel Islamist militancy, a government minister said on Tuesday.

The law, which carries the death penalty for insulting Islam or its Prophet Mohammad, has come under the spotlight this month after a court sentenced a Christian mother of four, Asia Bibi, to death in a case stemming from a village dispute.

Widespread media attention on the case has led to renewed appeals by human rights groups for the repeal of the law but Minister for Minorities Shahbaz Bhatti said that would not happen.

“(Repeal) is not being considered though we are considering changing it so that misuse of the law should be stopped,” Bhatti told Reuters. The law enjoys widespread support in Pakistan, which is more than 95 percent Muslim, and politicians are loathe to be seen as soft on the defense of the religion.

Blasphemy convictions are common although the death sentence has never been carried out. Most convictions are thrown out on appeal, but angry mobs have killed many people accused of blasphemy.

Bhatti said consultations with Islamic clerics and representatives of religious minorities on amending the law would soon be held. He said repealing it was not being considered because that could provoke religious parties and militants who want to topple the pro-U.S civilian government.

Not a good sign when the government is essentially frightened of extremist backlash.

    Thanks a lot, Zia-ul-Haq.

Pakistan: Peshawar Imam: "A reward to kill Asia Bibi"

In his sermon, Maulana Yousuf Qureshi of the Mohabat Khan mosque, said that if the appeals court judge innocent Asia Bibi will be the mujahideen to kill her. The leader has also warned the government on any changes to the law on blasphemy.

Islamabad - On the Friday prayer imam of the largest mosque in Peshawar offered a reward of 4,500 euro, for anyone who kills Asia Bibi. In his sermon, Maulana Yousuf Qureshi warned the government against any move to abolish or amend the blasphemy law. " We will strongly resist - said the religious leader - any attempt to repeal laws which provide protection to the sanctity of Holy Prophet Muhammad". "Whoever kills Asia Bibi – he continued - will be given a reward of 500 thousand rupees from the Mohabat Khan mosque". The imam said that if the appeals court judge Asia Bibi innocent, the mujahideen will kill her.

According to local sources Qureshi does not have many followers, but his threats increase the climate of tension in the country and are likely to influence government decisions. Already in 2006, Qureshi promised rewards amounting to over 1 million for anyone who succeeded in killing the Danish cartoonists, guilty of having drawn the cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad.

Bishop Rufin Anthony of Islamabad, tells AsiaNews: "I'm not surprised by the threats of the imam of the Mohabat Khan mosque. The hard-line Taliban of these religious thread have turned our country into a breeding for terrorists". "Only a leader who has been brainwashed – he continued - can be argued as Islamic laws that have no basis in the Koran. These statements serve only to create a bad name for Pakistan and Islam and make the lives of Pakistanis even more miserable. " The prelate stresses that the country must get rid of these laws and needs an educational program sponsored by the State and the United Nations against these ideologies. "Asia Bibi - Bishop Rufin adds. is innocent and has been accused and sentenced to death for blasphemy over a trivial dispute with her neighbors. "

Sources of Justice and Peace Commission told AsiaNews: "Given that the blasphemy law, in its current form has no basis in Islam, it could be repealed in one day. This provision was not created by the masses and was not even requested by the people. "

I'm sorry, but what kind of religion has leaders that offer a reward for people to kill someone DURING PRAYER?

Why is this Imam not in jail yet?

Where are all other Imams of the country condemning, isolating and denouncing this Imam?

Well, let's not rush to judgement based on a small subset of extremists. It's odd that it mentions that he stated it at the largest mosque, and yet it also says he doesn't have many followers. As to why he's not in jail, I'm not sure either. It seems from a logical perspective that death threats shouldn't be condoned regardless of what country you're in and that the Imams should condemn him as well. The positive side of me is thinking that they're not giving him any attention because to do so would bring free press to his cause. The negative side of me is thinking that people are too worried to tackle this cause head on because they don't want to be construed as soft on Islamic issues. Regardless, you seem hell bent on discounting Islam as having any positive aspects to it whatsoever. Have you been individually affected in any way? If so, I apologize from the 99.9% of muslims that are not extremists and just want to coexist with the rest of the world.

That's the best you have?

Where are all the other imams of the country? Can't they speak up collectively, with their names? And why is the guy not in jail? He already put a bounty on the head of the Danish cartoonist - should have been in jail for incitement to murder since then already.

ATW, Honestly, I don't think you will ever be satisfied with any positive actions of any Muslims. You find the opposite of a silver lining.

That's like me asking why every single American politician didn't speak up against Abu Gharib collectively?

You should go ask the author of the article who all the imams are, what their names are, and maybe even ask him to introduce them to you.

    Doctor arrested for blasphemy: police

KARACHI: A doctor has been arrested for insulting the Prophet Mohammed in Pakistan, police said on Sunday, in a second high profile case throwing the spotlight on the country’s controversial anti-blasphemy laws.

Naushad Valiyani was detained on Friday following a complaint by a medical representative who visited the doctor in the city of Hyderabad.

“The arrest was made after the complainant told the police that Valiyani threw his business card, which had his full name, Muhammad Faizan, in a dustbin during a visit to his clinic,” regional police chief Mushtaq Shah told AFP.

“Faizan accused Valiyani of committing blasphemy and asked police to register a case against the doctor.”

Shah said the issue had been resolved after Valiyani, a member of Pakistan’s Ismaili community, apologised but local religious leaders intervened and pressed for action.

“Valiyani had assured Faizan that he did not mean to insult the Prophet Mohammed by throwing the visiting card in the dustbin,” Shah said, adding that the police had registered a case under the Blasphemy Act.

A Pakistani court last month sentenced to death Aasia Bibi, a Christian mother-of-five found guilty of blasphemy.

Bibi was arrested in June 2009 after Muslim women claimed that she made derogatory remarks about the Prophet Mohammed. She was set upon by a mob, arrested by police and sentenced on November 8.

The government attempted to pardon Bibi after an international outcry over the case, but a Pakistani court prevented it from granting her a swift pardon.

She can be executed only if the Lahore high court upholds her sentence on appeal. No date has yet been set for the appeal hearing.

Most of those convicted of blasphemy in Pakistan have their sentences overturned or commuted on appeal through the courts. – AFP

Be honest, did this story make you orgasm because as soon as you came across it on one of your islamist watch websites you knew you were going to be able to post it on clutchfans and prove to all the posters here that Islam is a disgusting religion?

Do you have anything constructive or comments on the article, or just the poster?

What did you think of a doctor being arrested for tossing away a business card with the name Mohammed on it?

    Pretty sickening, isn't it?

No, I think Muhammad Faizan pulled a dick move by calling the cops on him. He was probably just pissed for getting his card thrown in the trash. No one here agrees with this behavior.

The real issue is not one guy pulling a dick move, but that there is actually a law and a police that makes it possible to pull that kind of dick move.

You know, I believe this was pushed on further by the local religious leaders just because he is an Ismaili. There are a lot of people who don't like Ismailis. If this would have happened to anyone else there, I don't think the police would have ever been called.

I agree with this but ATW's point still deserves to be addressed: this is a ridiculous law that should be dealt with immediately.

I'm tired of having to make excuses...
