Bima might have a deeper explanation, but players overseas rights count similar to draft picks where they count 0 dollars for salary matching purposes. If the Rockets were to trade him, they would essentially let the team get his rights first, and let them work the buyout and work out his contract. There just really is no reason to sign him first before moving him, other than if you think you can use his newly signed salary to match in a trade (which is something that gets asked about all the time as people love putting Llull in fake trade proposals with Toronto for Lowry or Denver for Lawson). If the Rockets were to try something like that, they would be operating under the normal S&T rules in the CBA which prohibit signing draft picks to a sign and trade. I don't know of any loopholes to that in regards to Foreign players. I'm under the impression they are treated the same as draft picks in regards to sign and trades. ............... Now in regards to financial value Les Alexander might have on Sergio Llull that he wants to recoup in a trade... that's a whole other discussion. Les spent out of pocket well over 2 million dollars to trade for the 2nd round pick years ago. I would assume that as a sound financial minded business person, he'd want to recoup what he valued as well over 2 million dollars in assumed assets or player value in return to let go of that investment.
Sorry, no time to write a comprehensive article on the Rockets' options to getting Aldridge. So many possibilities, although none are particularly likely. Morey's certainly got a puncher's chance of getting Aldridge, but it will take a lot of cooperation from at least 1-2 third parties. (Also, stop rebelling against Twitter. Almost every question that gets asked here I probably answer at some time on Twitter.) Draft picks count $0 in trades, regardless of how much a team paid to get those draft rights from another team. Yeah, pretty much this. The CBA "prohibition" on signing-and-trading draft picks is simply that a team has to wait 30 days after a draft pick signs before trading him. That's not a particularly Draconian prohibition and one that can be factored into the timing of various transactions.
If McDaniel is going to get a big offer from someone (e.g. Philly), could we work it as a sign and trade for an unlikely to be conveyed pick (e.g. protected except 55-60), and thereby obtain a sizable TPE to use in a future deal (either for one player, or simultaneous deals involving another asset)?
No, not really. Teams cannot sign-and-trade players using the MLE. So, unless the Rockets are going to create cap room to sign-and-trade McDaniels (they're not), I don't see this happening.
Bima, here is a question for you. Assuming Rockets want to re-sign their own free agents, is there a prefered order to sign them in? I remember that last year we wanted Parsons to sign a contract as late as possible, then us match it. Oh well on that one. Any factors we should watch for to give fans an idea of Rockets stratagies or final outcomes?
Bima, If the Rockets make the proposed snt of LMA for Prigs, Papa, Ariza, and Jones: Can they resign Brewer with Bird rights? Smith for the $2.5m? Match offers for Bev or McDaniels? Use the MLE on Llull? Thanks!
If the Rockets are operating over the cap, the order in which they resign their free agents isn’t going to make a difference. Parsons was an exception last year because the Rockets were considering operating under the cap in order to sign Chris Bosh, and thus his low cap-hold relative to his expected final contract was a factor. Keep an eye on whether KJ McDaniels gets a contract offer early on during the moratorium. The Rockets will need the full, non-taxpayer MLE available to make a competitive offer to Sergio Llull, so they’ll need to get a commitment from Sergio fairly soon to decide whether or not to match. One interesting option might be to match a lowball offer sheet (something like the Carl Landry 3yr/$9M), sign Montrezl Harrell to a 3 or 4 year deal using the other part of the MLE, then sign and trade Corey Brewer for a PG, if Llull is not interested in coming over. Mario Chalmers or Trey Burke might be options here. Brewer can be resigned using Early Bird rights up to a roughly $8M starting salary. Considering the Rockets required him to drop his player option of roughly $4.5M as a condition of the trade, I can’t imagine that Houston is going to sign him for all that much. The only moves that are mutually exclusive are resigning McDaniels and signing Sergio Llull. They both will likely require most if not all of the non-taxpayer MLE. One thing to keep in mind is that the use of either the sign-and-trade or the non-taxpayer MLE hard caps the Rockets at $85.6M for the remainder of the year, with no exceptions, even in the case of injury. This probably won’t be an issue outside of matching a ridiculous offer sheet for Beverley (~$8M), using the full MLE and overpaying Brewer (~$8M), but flirting with the hard cap rarely works out well for teams, often leading to incredibly weak benches. See the Clippers this year, and the Bulls last year.
If the choice for Terry was $5 million guaranteed (first year only, second and third years nonguaranteed), or $1 million to play with a contender, I would bet he would he wouldn't walk away from the extra $4 million. That would be windfall like Van Horn received a few years ago. Of course, it would probably cost us DMo to get Portland to accept Terry at $5 million.
Wouldn't it be crucial to know the cap before FA starts: <blockquote class="twitter-tweet" lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">League sources tell <a href="https://twitter.com/CBSSports">@CBSSports</a> that the 2015-16 salary cap could be as much as $2 million higher than projected. <a href="http://t.co/ICeG8jGBDa">http://t.co/ICeG8jGBDa</a></p>— Ken Berger (@KBergCBS) <a href="https://twitter.com/KBergCBS/status/616078836036321281">July 1, 2015</a></blockquote> <script async src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>
Bima, I am sorry for being a troll and annoying. Please unblock me from twitter and listen to me again on this site.
It doesn't sound like much, but it can be the difference between getting LMA AND keeping several of our current players under contract or missing LMA and just staying over the cap with our MLE.
Yeah the $2MM could save a player or two for HOU or SA in terms of LMA. Could allow other teams to get another player within the cap, like LA for example.

In a short amount of time you've manage to get bima our resident cap expert and batman jones who knows Daryl morey personally to basically curse you out as a troll. Good job.
Ya have to earn it man. Put up some quality posts with real thought. Tell us why you think the Rockets should/should not sign LMA. Tell us what free agents you like for the Rockets to look into, tell us what you think about the other contracts handed out around the NBA. Apologizing and just making filler posts like "I agree with this" aren't going to garner respect. They add nothing to the board.
Bima, how soon after signing Harrell can he be traded? Is it the same as for first round picks (30 days I think)?
