I am putting this in the hangout as I feel the absurdity of this transcends sports. http://www.packers.com/news-and-eve...xpansion/17178be6-6fdc-49a2-bffe-d650bda38ef5 If you don't feel like reading the entire thing basically you are paying $250 for a certificate that says you are supporting the packers. You really can't benefit from it since you can't sell the stock. You would be better off just buying tickets so at least you get go to a game. But I guess a sucker is born every minute.
As codell said, you'd be buying tickets on the private market, so that wouldn't benefit the team. This is no different than buying Packers memorabilia that hangs on your wall or sits somewhere in your house. That said, THIS is what makes this such a dumb idea: If the Commissioner of the NFL (the “Commissioner”) decides that a shareholder of an NFL member club has been guilty of conduct detrimental to the welfare of the NFL then, among other things, the Commissioner has the authority to fine such shareholder in an amount not in excess of $500,000 and/or require such shareholder to sell his or her stock. In addition, if the Commissioner determines that a shareholder has bet on the outcome or score of any game played in the NFL, among other things, then the Commissioner may fine such shareholder in an amount not in excess of $5,000 and/or require such shareholder to sell his or her stock. If the Commissioner requires a shareholder to sell his or her stock, then the Corporation may have a right to repurchase the stock at $0.025 per share. See “Transfer Restrictions.”
There are plenty of tickets on stubhub and sites like that. People are surprised madoff can bilk billions, I am not when I see 112000, per adeelsiddiqui, have pretty much just given money to the packers for nothing. This isn't a college either this is a private corporation that makes a bunch of money.
Right - but the point of buying this is to support the Packers and their stadium improvements. These are people trying to support their team. Buying tickets on Stubhub doesn't do that. No it's not. The Packers are the only publicly owned sports franchise in the country. They are operated as a non-profit, I believe.
I mean they aren't a publicly traded company. Like facebook is a private company, but they have a lot of stock holders. I guess if fans want to give their money to a team more power to them, I guess it is better than forcing people to pay with publicly funded stadiums etc.
No offense to Les, Mcnair, or Crane but the Packers is the type of ownership system that I want all the Houston teams to model after.
They're the only publicly-owned franchise in professional sports, and they play in freaking GREEN BAY, WISCONSIN. The fans do it to support the team. They realize the shares are essentially worthless.
Does this really apply to "shareholders" here since they're not really "shareholders" in the common sense of the word?
Yeah - they aren't publicly traded, but there's also no owner that reaps all the profits. All of their stadium improvements have come from these types of "offerings" to the community - the city basically supports the team's growth voluntarily.
Those are the terms are listed in this particular "stock offering", so it applies to these fake share things, I assume.
they get voting rights from what i read. the last offering was 10 or 15 years ago at $200. the Green Bay Packers Foundation would be the beneficiary if the Packers were ever sold and moved. the shareholders made this so in 1999 annual meeting. these are real though, directly contributing to the team
Winnipeg man now owns stock in ‘Green Boy Packers’ Some Green Bay Packers fans who spent $250 on a single share of team stock didn't get the certificate in time for Christmas. Others did. It's a toss-up as to who should be more disappointed. At least one of the 250,000 shares of Packers stock that have been sold since early December features a glaring typo on the stock certificate. Arvind, of Winnipeg, sent in a picture of his shareholder certificate to SI's Jimmy Traina. It reads "Green Boy Packers," which sounds more like a hipster rap duo from Milwaukee rather than one of the most storied franchises in NFL history. "I just received my Packers certificate," Arvind wrote to Traina via email. "[It's] kind of annoying, kind of hilarious. I wonder if the certificate is worth something now?" Skeptical as I usually am of possible hoaxes like this, Arvind's certificate looks fairly legit. "Green Boy" is written at every reference to the Green Bay Packers, while the seal at the bottom correctly lists the location of the team as "Green Bay, Wis." The spacing and fonts look correct for all misspelled words. It's either one heck of a Photoshop or a ridiculous chain-reaction typo. Arvind wasn't the only Packers fan to be dissatisfied with the stock deal. The team's website promised that certificates would reach buyers in time for Christmas, but a glitch on the first day of sales kept hundreds of copies from going out to buyers. The Packers have made $60 million so far from the stock sale. http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nfl-s...w-owns-stock-green-boy-packers-152532811.html
112,000 @250 ea. is 28 mil. (and that's one each, I see that they've made much more). That would outmatch corporate funds supporting SOPA right there. Someone should make a "I thwarted SOPA" certificate and sell them at X a piece, with all money going towards its demise. Sorry, I digress.
Actually, Green Bay's other option for raising funds for their stadium improvement was to sell naming rights to the stadium. think about that for a minute.... How fanatic are Wisconsin residents about the Packers? Do you think they want their stadium renamed from "Lambeau Field" to "Pepsi Field" ? For fans, this stock offering is a MUCH better option. And... to say that Packers stock is valueless is to say that pride is valueless.... which is absolutely not true.
They also know that stuff like this will keep them in Green Bay forever. We in Houston should understand that more than most. DD
I wish all sports teams were modeled after the packers. Instead taxpayers support billionaire owners. link
