I feel like it's a good move. He had his weaknesses when he last coach, but mostly good coaching. I'm sure he's learned a lot, and he's learned from some good people.
Damn McMillan was my first choice as Rockets head coach for a while now Im sad Rockets didnt pick him up, but happy he is coaching a team again
You want a weakness? I remember his blazers playing pathetically slow basketball, like bottom ten in pace. Meanwhile, Bird let go of Vogel because the offense stunk. This is real, folks
Nice, takes a competetive team off the market for coaches to sign woth. Now down to us, Orlando, Kings and Grizzles right?
Seems like he was in Portland a lifetime ago but it was only 4 years ago. <blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Portland's pace in McMillan's last 5 full seasons<br>06-07: 29th<br>07-08: 29th<br>08-09: 30th<br>09-10: 30th<br>10-11: 30th<a href="https://t.co/R2ygJSWIwt">https://t.co/R2ygJSWIwt</a></p>— Chris Herring (@HerringWSJ) <a href="https://twitter.com/HerringWSJ/status/731658159618691072">May 15, 2016</a></blockquote> <script async src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script> <iframe src="http://www.basketball-reference.com/play-index/share.cgi?id=NpJoF&output=iframe" width=694 height=618 scrolling=auto> </iframe>
You remember well. I watched those Blazers teams very closely. Unless Nate McMillan completely remakes himself, Bird really blew it IMO. I say that as someone who believes Vogel is overrated. I didn't think "Sarge" was ever going to get another HC job. Hopefully his relationship skills with players have improved.
Why is slow pace a weakness? That's a Van Gundy staple. Why not slow it down rather than trying to keep up with what everyone else is doing? Seems more logical than trying to beat the GSWs of the world at their own game. When a team wins 73 games, it's probably not a good idea to try to mimic what they're doing. You will fail.
I think they mention it b/c Bird has been preaching speed it up & that was one thing that led to Vogel's demise.
They didn't just play at a slow pace in the half court, they didn't try to fast break much off turnovers and rebounds. It wasn't just deliberate basketball, it was overly risk-averse...he'd prefer to never fast break rather than risk a single turnover. It's great to be anti-turnover, everyone is...but when you go too far to that extreme, you kill your team's offense.
Thank Goodness he isn't Rockets coach. ANYONE who coached or played for Seattle when we couldn't beat them should never be a Rockets coach. And even if he was, he would get intense hate from this board for his low scoring offense.
