Just for argument's sake: -How do you know the next object thrown is not a chair or batteries? How do you know, at the time, it was beer and not beer mixed with gasoline? -Being a player, you are threatened verbally every game by fans. There is no doubt after Wallace, a beloved piston, choked Artest, Artest was hearing all kinds of threats from fans. Wouldn't it be logical for Artest to immediatly stop the thrower? I know someone on this board has got to be familiar with the law. Step up and enlighten us. I personally don't see Artest getting charged in court. He'll get suspended by Nba, rightfully so, but not in a court room.
The reason so lost to you why some people called him mexican, is simple, THEY THINK HE LOOKS MEXICAN! And guess what? Its their opinion of what mexican looks like, its not anything more than that. Noone is trying to prove beyond a reasonable doubt he is mexican lol, they are just describing him as best they can in a very simple general manner. To some he looks mexican, thats it.. thats enough to say he looks mexican! they arent thinking detroits pop. is blah bah blah... and then formulating a guess... its not that big an issue. And if you though that guy looked romanian and said so... guess what.. thats fine also! Its ur perception! We are not gonna argue with ur perception of how he looks! Its like me and you argueing over who is better looking, rocket girl 1 or 2. IMHO i think your logic is little flawed here.. Becuse if the statement "the mexican guy" is unproven, that means their is a chance it is true, or can be proven correct, right? So if the statement can be be true or proven correct, how then can it also then at the same time be 100% inaccurate with no possibility of it being accurate? rather i believe the statement is merely unproven with its inaccuracy or accuracy to questioned
You forgot the part where O'neal yells out " Take that, you FAT MEXICAN !!!! " Just joking, SamFisher
Spot on. That fact that NJRocket, RocketsPimp and co do not get it utter shameful and unfortunate. Brings back memories of Fuzzy Zoeller all over again. But hey if you do not get it.....you might be a *neck according to Jeff Foxworthy.
I still haven't gotten a reply from SamFisher, maybe we are the SAME PERSON Except tinman is the more articulate and humorous personna. Plus creative and thought provoking. The dudes who got punched were labeled 'mexican' because so many Detroit fans got smacked. 'white kid in glasses' got smacked by artest. So when you say 'dude who got punched by Artest' you have to describe him. I dont think anyone is trying to be racist. if it were me I call him 'hispanic'. he could be of any latin american country.
Oh please. If you believe that, then I guess we could say, how do we know that fan didn't have a gun and was going to shoot Artest, and therefore, Artest could have shot him in the name of self defense? Its called common sense. If Artest seriously believes that a fan out there is going to throw gasoline on him or shoot him, then he needs to not only be suspended, but be committed. Using extremes to prove points never flies.
Nice description, but wildly inaccurate. The whole brawl should be summed up like this: West Indian lays on scorer's table, beer is thrown at him by Scotsman, however the Jamaican jumps up past the Croatian and goes after the Romanian instead; then in another side brawl, a Congolese-Guyanan goes after the Mexican, (who is obviously mexican, and could not be of any other ethnic descent, be it hispanic, middle eastern, or otherwise), and slips on the floor on a puddle made by ice, that was previously dropped by an apparently Filipino ball boy when he bumped into the Genoese security guard. Now, does this sound ridiculous to anybody? If so, why?
Nothing. It's just funny to me that whenever people see a grainy 3 second clip of a darkish skinned person outside of Detroit, MI, not only do they automatically know what general ethnic group he is a member of, but they can further boil it down to what exact sovereign state his ancestors come from, I'm just congratulating people on their genealo-telepathic accomplishments and thanking them for reminding me of them.
Sam, this isn't the D&D or something. it's just an innocuous on-the-spot generalization. why do you care about it? no one's proving it beyond a shadow of a doubt. maybe no ethnic name could be attached but it doesn't mean anything that it was. they automatically know what general ethnic group he is a member of, but they can further boil it down to what exact sovereign state his ancestors come from, I'm just congratulating people on their genealo-telepathic accomplishments you're blowing this way out of proportion... unless you're claiming people are racist against mexicans and that's why this is happening, but you've said you're not doing that so i don't get it.
This can be broken down into many debates... 1) Those that think that we should KNOW exactly what nationality a person is before we call them that, even if it's for the purpose of describing them or without an intent to insult (Be sure you carry your International Race Identifier Computer next time). 2) Those that think it's ok to decribe someone by their race -- as long as it's without an intent to insult (This is how I think). 3) Thoes that think that it's racist to even decribe anyone by their race (PC! Bah hum-bug!) 4) Those that know that Mexicans, Colombians, Venezuelans, Puerto ricans, Cubans, never liked to be confused with each other (This is true!). Sam, I'm not sure what you are trying to prove. As francis 4 prez said, It's just an innocent generalization for the purpose of identifying a particular person.
One of the things I find oddest about this whole string of events is how little Ben Wallace is blamed. The actual sequence of events was Wallace throwing Artest to the floor on the previous play, so Artest didn't protest, he just came down the court and gave Wallace a little tap of his own. Wallace over-reacted regardless of reason, but he outright deserved that foul. He was frustrated because they were losing and Artest was killing them. I'm not saying that he was directly responsible for the events that unfolded, because nothing he did was anything we haven't seen before and he, nor anyone else, could have ever predicted the way that would go, however, had he have been a little bit more sportsman like, this never would have happened. The fans were out of control. I agree that Artest had no business going into the stands, but I honestly don't think he meant to actually assault someone. I think he was just going to find the fan. Artest definitely did the wrong thing in the situation, but let's be honest here, Artest isn't very bright. He's a hell of a ball player, but I swear to god this guy is like Forrest Gump on steroids. Remember when Forrest Gump would punch anybody who gave Jenny a hard time and we thought it was cute? So there was no Jenny in the picture here, but Ron Ron is a Re Re. I'd seriously be interested in learning what his IQ is. Again, I'm not saying Ron Artest was completely justified. He shouldn't have gone into the stands at all, but come on guys, he's a r****d. I also don't think anything he did was out of line AT ALL until he went into the stands. I'm not buying this argument that anybody would have charged into the stands either. I wouldn't have and I don't think I know very many people who would either. Most civilized and secure men don't feel they have to meet every challenge to prove their manhood. Also, I think it's funny that a lot of people think this is going to harm the NBA. We live in a country where our president says "Bring it on!". We're a nation with a WWF mentality right now. It's disturbing. and what the hell, in my opinion, the blame lies in this order. 1. the fans 2. the detroit organization/ security. that was pathetic. 3. Ben Wallace 4. Ron Artest 4. Stephen Jackson There are a whole lot of 'if' scenarios here. If Ben Wallace hadn't over-reacted, if the fans didn't go nuts, if security was on top of things, if Artest didn't charge the stands... It's really hard to point the finger, but if I had to, those are my picks in order.
I think Artest will get more because Maxwell wasn't the habitual on the court offender that Artest has proven to be (and thats saying something, because we all know Maxwell was certifiably nuts). Not unlike how a 3 time DUI offender is going to receive a harsher punishment than a 1st time DUI offender. When someone keeps screwing up, you have to keep increasing the punishment until they stop. Thats why I hate the argument "well, if that was Jamal Tinsley", then it wouldn't be as big of a deal. Of course it wouldn't, because Jamal Tinsley doesn't have an NBA rap sheet like Artest. And it is aboslutely fair that the NBA would come down harder on Artest than they would on most NBA players. Can you blame the NBA? Artest clearly has severe emotional problems, whether they be anger or not. And THATS why he went into the stands. To justify it as some sort of self defense just doesn't work here IMO. Only a handful of sports professionals have had physical altercations with fans, and its no coincidenc that most of those that have, have been known to be mentally unstable or have anger problems (Maxwell, Wallace, Domie, etc.). The fact is, the NBA HAS to come down hard on him 1) To let Artest know that enough is enough and 2) To quite frankly, get Artest away from the game so he can sit back and re-evaluate his behavior. 1 game suspensions and fines no longer concern Artest. You take away the medium, long term, through which he is promoting himself and his behavior, and you will get his attention. The shame of it is, Artest is a great player would might just one day be good enough to be MVP. Dude is only 25 years old and he is pissing away his career because of his antics and anger problems, just like JR Rider did.
