    Isn't anyone afraid of being caught sharing music? I've only used bit torrent but I don't think any of these things is anonymous and the music industry has had some very public busts periodically.

    That's one thing about BitTorrent: unlike Kazaa, they can't view thousands and thousands of songs in your whole library. You just download that one (or two or nine) item, leave it seeding for a while until your share ratio is at 1, and then kill it. If someone did catch you, it would be only for that one song/album that you were still seeding...not a music library. It'd still be a fine, but that's an absolutely ineffective way of stopping the world from downloading (from a RIAA standpoint) - sitting there and getting one person at a time for one simple song. That stuff wouldn't fly in any court.

    Pasox - BitTorrent can come in the form of many different programs. You just choose which torrent handler is best for you. Then what you do is download a tiny text-like file from a torrent website and the BitTorrent program that you chose will open it, and from there, it uses all the information in that tiny file to go out and hunt down the other people who are sharing whatever it is. That's why a torrent's called a tracker. It's much like Kazaa, but instead of uploading your shared folder to a third party server when you log on, it just locates the people who are sharing that particular file and gets it straight from them. But for a program, I'd suggest Azureus (probably the most customizable, fast, user friendly, and detailed one) or BitTornado (doesn't use up as much memory because it's not written in Java, but downloads just as fast).

    And if you want to find good places to find torrent/trackers, go to www.link2u.tk
    That's got a whole bunch of sites, ranked by # of hits, and classified by what kind of torrents they have.

    Direct Connect ++
    http://dcplusplus.sourceforge.net/
    DC++ is an open source client for the Direct Connect protocol. Direct Connect allows you to share files over the internet without restrictions or limits. The client is completely free of advertisements and has a nice, easy to use interface. Firewall and router support is integrated and it’s easy and convenient to use functionality like multi-hub connections, auto connections and resuming of downloads.

    and Bit Torrents for video.

    BTW, I'm suprised noone here has mentioned DC++.
    Been using it for about 6 months.
    Its quite nice!:)
