With very few exceptions, I doubt that the people on this board (myself included) can tell you what an assistant coach does, much less have the ability to evaluate their performance. That being said, I don't think JVG is the type to "carry" anone who is not doing their work.
I hope they take Ewing and I'm pretty sure the Rockets would let him leave if that's what he wants. Teams usually let coaches walk to pursue newer or better jobs. But the Rockets can recieve compensation with the Knicks right?
Why does Yao need a private coach now? He is on a five-year plan, he is smart enough tol get there by himself. I don't want anyone to twist his development. After all, he is unique in his own way, he will dominating in his own way. As for Ewing, let him go.
geez how do ANY of you know what Ewing does on this team? Why do you all assume he's not worth anything and he doesn't help and all? Yao's lack of dominance could easily be due to Yao. Aside from that, why do you assume Ewing doesn't help anywhere else? Because of your perceptions during a game? Please... no one can criticize Ewing SO much to the point of just saying "please leave" unless you just really want someone to complain about..or to blame
If it were me, I would hire Russell to guide Yao's defensive development and Kareem to teach him the sky hook. Two of the best centers the NBA has ever seen could only speed Yao's development.
While this is a great idea, I doubt that Russell would come down to Htown, and Kareem is supposed to be an ass.
I've often wonder some of these things myself. There have been a lot of complains about Ewing on the bbs but I don't think any of you guys have anything to back up your complains that he's not doing anything. Obviously there is some bias since he played for the Knicks when the Rockets and Hakeem beat him, but I actually thought that Ewing would be a great mentor for Yao. Ewing was one of the NBA's best centers and what he lacked in athleticism he more than made up for in drive and hard work. I think Yao in many ways faces many of the same challenges as Ewing did and could probably learn a lot from him.
I've also wondered if PEwing hinders Yao's development.. based on the fact that Yao seems to have sort of regressed in terms of overall skills. J
I don't think Yao has regressed from last year. I don't think he has improved--which is NOT a good thing. He should have improved. But I also don't think he has regressed like so many seem to. Less breakout psycho games, but also more consistency. It may not seem like it, but if he's averaging close to the same or better without busting out as much, then it has to be more consistency. After the elbow thing, I think his shot is coming back. I think that hindered more than we know..
