So, if me and my white buddies called each other dirty [insert racial slur here] and weren't offended, no one else should be?

Did it come up on Around the Horn today? I'd like to see Mariotti's rebuttal.

As far as the PC crap goes, I think this country needs to lighten up on the derogatory card before we run out of words to say. I don't agree with anything homophobic, but being so sensitive just perpetuates it.

No pun or offense intended, but screw Ozzie Guillen. He does need to shut the hell up.

Sorry, but you're just wrong on this one. Using homophobic slurs reinforces the underlying belief system that homosexuals are not 'real' men, are less than 'real' men. Your argument really just doesn't stand up. Is it ok for me to say:

I use the N-word, but we do that where I come from. I went to see a Denzel Washington movie last week. I listen to Ray Charles. I don't mean n***** in a bad way, I'm just havin' some good ol' fashioned fun.

No, of course not. Not because blacks are a special class, but because dehumanization and discrimination are not funny. Unless you're going to say its ok to demean homosexuals then you've got a non-starter. Not only are you reinforcing your own homophobia when you use such slurs but you're also making a declaration to the rest of our society that it is ok to do so. Neither of those are desirable.

I think accepting it as ok perpetuates it. Telling people to 'toughen up and don't be so sensitive' perpetuates it.

It's just the way we are. If I took offense to one of my buddies calling me "gay" or "***" (get a lot of that these days living in Montrose, btw), then I would look like the idiot, or the touchy-feely guy. Sometimes a word is just a word.

Also, I still hang out with a black jamaican that was my roommate a couple of years ago. I call him "token" and "N*****" all the time.

I also call my friends "Manatee", another one "Dum dum", another one "Mantis Man" and "Mogwai". Another one "idiot" and "moron". Another one "'Tardee". Another one "Nine Months" and "petrified baby". It's just what we do. A lot of people call me "poopy."

To each their own. But I certainly know from where I live and who I hang around with that these names are not used to offend anyone. The only time I would understandibly see someone taking offense is if their child was in earshot.

Otherwise, why should you care what I call my friend? Mind your business, IMO.

It did. Mariotti said Ozzie should be suspended by Reinsdorf or Selig. That's the only way Ozzie will learn to think before he speaks. He called out Reinsdorf and Selig for driving Schott out of the game, but turning their heads to Ozzie. Reinsdorf leads the MLB equality committee so he's being a hypocrite if he takes no action. Winning ballgames excuses his actions.

I'm Venezuelan and I certainly don't insult people by calling them "maricones", what a copout

I like that he attacked Mariotti, who is a total ****, but not in that manner

I already explained why I should care - you don't live in a vaccuum. What you do affects those around you. There is a whole body of work in sociology, communications, linguistics, gender studies and others that says it IS harmful to use homophobic, sexist, or racist language. If it 'doesn't really mean anything' to you, then why use it? You cannot deny that there is such a body of peer reviewed, respected, and thoroughly researched work. Even if you don't agree - you could be wrong. Why do it? Are you more important than everyone else? This isn't something to be glib about. And that you use this speech with your friends doesn't prove anything.

    Hahahaha, owned.

I hope the Astros can face the White Sucks again, and prove that last year was a fluke. Maybe Drayton can even decide what to do with his own F-ing stadium this time around too. Or Selig might order the rain and cold shut off in Chicago.

No doubt Guillen should be fined because you should not use the word *** in that type of environment. That being said I still think it was hilarious, just because it's Jay Mariotti.

i hear ya, fatty. but it's completely non-responsive to the subject of this thread. ozzie and mariotti clearly aren't "buddies." he did mean this in a derogatory way. these aren't friends ripping on each other.

Your point would hold a lot more credence if homosexuals didn't use those two, and several other derogatory terms toward each other all the time. As I said, I live in a place to know these things. There isn't a vacuum. However, if I'm not saying something to be hurtful towards someone I know, and you overhear it, why should you be offended? And if you are, what if it were a gay couple messing with each other, as I've seen many times. For that matter, how would you know the context of our conversation either way?

It seems you are trying to be overly politically correct, which can slow progression, as well.

He could be referring to Games 3 or 4, but even then, I just don't see Garner as the type of person to not shake a fellow manager's hand, especially in front of a worldwide audience.

Plus, per the article, I could've sworn Guillen more than inquired about the roof issue. I thought he made a statement basically agreeing with MLB's decision or something. In any case, the guy just rubs me the wrong way.

ESPN would've talked for days about a manager in a WS refusing to shake the hand of the opposing manager.

    FFB,

Would you not understand why someone would be offended if they heard you call your black Jamaican roommate "n*****"? Seriously?

Do you think it's OK to go around throwing out racial slurs as long as the person you're saying it to isn't offended. And if they aren't, no one else should be? Come on.

To be honest, if children aren't involved or around, you should know that different groups use different comments. So, no. I don't think you should be offended.

If I call my chubby friend "manatee", would that offend people, also? What about "moron"?

As I said, they aren't used to be derogatory. Our group has been doing it for 20 years. Believe it or not, most people find it amusing more than anything else because we are so open with each other.

You're just missing the point. That gays use *** as a derogatory term doesn't validate its use, nor does it deny potential harm from the rhetoric. Words aren't meaningless, fatty. If they ARE meaningless, which is your argument - then why not use ANOTHER word? If they are meaningless to you but they potentially have harm - be it offending someone or more importantly reinforcing discriminatory and dehumanizing ideas - then why use it? Just because? Your 'me and my friends do it and don't hurt nothing' defense is pretty weak compared to the mass body of studies and literature that disagree. But you generally think you're right, and I understand that, but I'm just asking you to be reasonable. IF there is a 90% chance you are right, and a 10% chance you are wrong - why would you still continue to use these slurs? What do you GAIN by using them? If you are not actually busting your friend for being 'homosexual like' or 'not a real man' when you call him '***' then why can't you use another word? Just be reasonable. It IS offensive to other people. It DOES reinforce discrimination and dehumanize. But even if you're pretty sure it doesn't, there isn't a reason for you to continue to use it.

Not sure you caught this, but I am the one who is most recently getting this jab, and it doesn't offend me in the least.

And I do personally feel that the context any word is used determines whether it is offensive.

For example "F***ing A" is a lot less offensive than yelling "F*** You!"

Or calling someone an a**hole can be offensive completely based on it's enunciation and expression.

Calling a friend a "homo" or a "***" takes on the same principles based on how and to whom it is used, IMO.

In the Guillen instance this argument is moot because Gullen used it in a derogatory way and preceded the word "***" with an expletive (assumably also starting with "f").

How would you feel if someone who you had issues with called you an "effin ***"? Would it be the same as calling you a jacka#% or a jerk?

Assume you caused a minor fender bender. When the police got there, the other driver pointed at you and said "that jerk ran into me". Would that make you feel the same as if he said "that effin *** ran into me"?

I kind of got away from the Guillen reference. In that case, it could be construed as offensive.

What I am saying is that NO word is 100% offensive all the time. There is always a context in the way it was delivered.
