So if they just proved there is a Parallel Universe, did they just prove in the Parallel Universe that there isn't a Parallel Universe?

    Or maybe,

In a Parallel Universe, they would not prove that there is a Parallel Universe.

Maybe we are in the universe that did not discover the parallel one, and they have already discovered ours, thus causing us to only now discover them, while it then caused them to have not yet discovered us...

    And so on.

Mathematicians can't prove the existence/non-existence of many things, such as God, and the number of stars in the universe.

As the article noted this theory has been around for awhile and has been a gold mine for sci-fi. One area where the parellel universe idea causes some problems for another big sci-fi trope is involving time travel. The idea of parallel universes defeats the idea of the altering the space-time continuum if you travel back in time because the continuum you alter back in time want be the same continuum that you have come from.

    Interesting stuff!

I did. It was a light lead in to the X-Files.

It's just math on a whiteboard. If the equations demonstate a plausible theory and it survies peer review you can't call it Horse Hockey. You can call it Horse Hypothesis. But until experiments are devised to test the theory and the results are repeatable, it's just mental masterbation, squirting out theories , giving satisfaction to the small group of people who can even fathom it.

Since we live in a four demisional world, with a limited set of senses and tools, theory may be all we ever have. But in the 20's E=Mc 2 was at about the same level of understanding so, you never know.

You know the people that do this are a lot more rare and special than people than people who can throw footballs, recite lines for a movie camera or play guitars.

Funny how we value things, huh.

So what does this say about the human soul and of the 'afterlife'? This is absolutely mind bottling.

Gregory Perelman's results are enough to keep mathematics busy for decades. Who knew the shape of the universe and the laws of thermodynamics were so closely related? Heck, I've been using Ricci Scalars and Tensors for some time now and that guy just blew me away. Your answer blows up to infinity in finite time? That's ok... we'll just pinch it off and start over. Genius.
