Owners back to offering 49-51 band of BRI, where players get at least 49% & max of 51% based on league revenue, sources say.....

    Chris_Broussard Chris Broussard
Players rejected 49-51 band 2 weeks

Players rejected 49-51 band 2 weeks ago & countered w/51-53 band...owners also opening to $5 mill midlevel, tho no agreement reached....

Am I crazy or did this all start with them arguing about 46% vs 57%, with the median being 51.5%, then it was 50% vs 53%, with the middle once again coming to 51.5%, then a bunch of bullsh-t happened ...and now they're arguing 51% vs 52%?!

I would lock out the players until theres harsh luxury tax penalties or a hard cap in place, they're worried about getting paid...they're gonna get paid anyway, i as a fan want more even competition all over not 3 or 4 salary/talent heavy teams every damn year. I hope if they reach an agreement that if theres not a hard cap which i doubt then there will be crazy luxury tax penalties that ive read about, if not, this whole thing will have been an epic fail.

Seems to me the owners correctly made sure to start low so the average comes to around 50%. Think about it. The players started with 57% of the last CBA. Now they've given up at least 4% and likely 6-7%. That's why the owners did all this BS with an initial lowball offer.

If the owners started with 50% as you wished, the players would be pissed at the number and arguing 55%. No matter what, they'd be still arguing. The only way they wouldn't argue is if the owners just kept the 57% BRI for the players. Which would've screwed themselves over.

Classic lowball technique. Owners were not serious about 47%, but the players wouldn't go for 50/50 if it was the first offer.

I think the owners need to back off their insistence on the elimination of Bird rights. Without Bird rights, many teams (especially the smaller market teams the league is trying to protect) will not be able to retain their most talented players. Bird rights also reward teams who draft well and/or make good trades. Maybe there can be some limited restrictions on Bird rights, but total elimination would be a bad idea for competitive balance.

I do, however, like the owners' apparent compromise on the MLE to leave it roughly the same size but to make it available only every other year to teams over the cap (like the Biannual Exception). The players need to either take that offer or just agree on a lower MLE available every year to teams over the cap.

So apparently it's 50% vs. 52.5% and that's why talks broke off.

Oh, I know what they're doing, but my point was that they've been inching towards this 51.5% meeting ground for a while and now and it's ridiculous they're actually going to get hung up on the last 0.5%

Of course, that all seems moot after tonight.
