if Mario had the same motor as Cushing he'd also be busted for steroids.

We all know Mario and Amobi underperformed. Bob is just speaking the truth.

well i do agree the system is flawed and something more reasonable needs to be set up. Maybe the OU QB (i'm completely blanking on his name) getting almost $50 mill guaranteed will wake people up

he's avg almost 12 sacks a year the last 3 years (even with battling an injury last year), he commands consistent double teams, he still gets a ton of pressure on the qb, has become very good at run stopping and all the while having very little D line help...how exactly is that underperforming?

I read that article earlier today, and saw more praise for Brian than I did "singling" out Mario etc.

Man I have a major Man Crush on Cushing.

With the risk of injury in the NFL, I have no problem with a system where a kid can max out his value without playing a down. Owners in the NFL have it better than other owners because these contracts aren't guaranteed, only the signing the bonus. If you put in a rookie scale are they gonna guarantee that money?

That is an excellent, excellent point. One I hadn't considered yet.

don't confuse truth with opinion. even if you agree, it's still opinion.

I don't have a problem with the owner commenting and trying to put a fire under someone...Mario never comes across to me like a beast...he's good, but to me doesn't have that killer instinct...

However, to model your former #1 pick for a person that used roids, a bit much...

I don't know, I've criticized mario's performance and got some flack over it but I never attributed to lack of effort. to me mario's problem is he has no moves, he just bull rushes every play seems like. I think mario has killer instinct, if he has an open lane to a sack, its a gimme, he will get the sack or a tackle behind the line. he just needs to work on some moves to get off the blocks.

I think it's perfectly OK for an owner to call out underachievers. Mario can get ten sacks in his sleep. How many could he get if he stepped on the gas?

That's an excellent observation and one that I have made also. Mario may have been drafted No. 1 but he was basically a project player who needed to develop better pass rushing technique. So far, the results are mixed - he still basically bull rushes on most plays. Contrast that to a Robert Mathis who has a number of moves in his arsenal and you can see where Mario still has room to improve. Unfortunately, when you are drafted No. 1, more is expected of you and Mario was drafted there to be not just good but great.

I understand your argument but I cannot justify a $50-$60M guaranteed contract to a player who has yet to step on a NFL field. NFL contracts are structured in a way to compensate for the risk of injury, a rookie pay scale wouldn't change that, it would just help prevent "overcompensation." I used quotation marks because I'm not sure if this is more about compensation than milking the system since almost everyone knows lottery teams (especially #1 overall) have no choice but to pay.

Also, NFL owners might not have it better now that players are holding out to restructure their deals.

BTW, I'm not sticking up for NFL owners/teams. I just think a rookie pay scale is best for the league, especially considering the recent trends.

My thoughts exactly. I understand the fact that the guarantee money is all they get but as these #1's money just gets higher and higher...it's getting flat out ridiculous. At the rate it's been increasing, in the next 10 years we will be hearing about $80 mill guaranteed. That's absurd.

    LMFAO, this is awesome.

I wonder what other genius motivational quotes Uncle Bob will come up with next.

"I didn't see Sammy Sosa and Mark McGwire slacking off in 1998!"

"Lance Armstrong didn't give up when the going got tough up those mountains"

"That Marion Jones trained her ass off before the Olympics! It mad eher a gold medalist!"

"The 86' Mets were always hyped up and ready to play!"

This I do know, our defensive line hasn't exactly set the world on fire, and I love Cushing's intensity. Obviously McNair is not encouraging other players to get "roided" up, just show a little emotion, try harder.

Mario just needs to keep performing. As long as he is performing, no problem. This "show a little intensity/emotion", I dont necessarily buy. Not every player is going to be a Bernard Pollard or Brian Cushing. Mario isnt going to rope the cattle after a sack as Jared Allen does. That just isnt him. What about Matt or Andre? I hardly see emotion from Matt on the field, but that isn't to say he sucks or isn't good. What about Andre? They might not show much emotion but both get the job done. Really all you can ask for right?

As for Amobi, well totally different story. He's just not very good. A one demensional player who stops the run. Not much a pass rusher. Certainly hasnt lived up to the "hype" or expectations for the #10 pick.

Some also say Mario lacks the killer instinct. This is a bad comparison if you will, but recently, someone in the 'Dish brought up is "heart" something you are born with or can it be acquired? Insert killer instinct. Are you born with a "killer instinct" or is it something you can acquire? If the latter, how do you get or acquire a killer instinct?
