Houston It's Worth It Way cooler than Houston Proud, plus I like wearing my mosquito t-shirt to the gym!
I don't give a crap if the rest of the world hates it. There is no point in trying to be the chamber of commerce. I'm tired of defending it. If people don't like it here, move someplace else, don't visit and kiss my ass. How's that for a new city slogan?
jeff.. I figure people speak with their feet. and the fact that we have the 4th largest city in america.. obviously people must like this city we should close the houston borders.. and charge a 50 dollar tax for non houstonians on every gallon of oil they use that was refined in houston area
My woman wants to move up north someplace.. I told here she'll be going without me if she does, there is NO way in hell I'm gonna leave just cause she wants a change of location... this City is too great to leave.. PLUS I dont wanna have to spring for leauge pass every year and plane tickets for the playoffs..
Do not move! Chain yourself to the statue of Sam Houston on his horse! If you leave, you will never return. I left upon the urging of my wife for St. Louis and hated it. I eventually found some redeeming qualities, but would never recommend a Houstonian moving anywhere north of the Red River. I have settled comfortably into life in Tucson, but I still miss the Houston sports, Tia Maria margaritas and other things of Texas. Also once you live elsewhere, your body no longer can handle the humidity. Never bothered me until I had lived elsewhere for over a year. It is hilarious to hear the folks in Arizona complain when the humidity goes up and hits 30%. You would think they are being thrown into the bowels of hell or something.
Kinda along the lines of the "Keep Austin Weird" campaign of a few yers back. This would be a hell of alot more direct, but the intention of keeping Houston for Houstonians is the same....which is fine by me, 'cuz I'm sick to death of defending my city to closed-minded morons, too.
Well if that's the case than you've got nothing on Kinsasha, Zaire, Karachi Pakistan, Sao Paolo, Brazil
Its not just people in MN, its also people in CA, MA, NY, IL, OH, CO, WI, IA and so on. I was dating someone awhile back from the Upper Midwest and we were getting kind of serious and I brought up that I would like to move back to Houston sometime. She flat out told me she would die if she lived in Houston. There's a pretty high level of hate towards our fair city and state even by people who've been there. I had a friend who lived in Chicago who got sent to Houston for training and he told me he didn't understand how I could defend the place. Another friend from NYC told me one of the worst experiences of her life was visiting Houston. On top of that Red McCombs and Tom Delay haven't helped. I did some campaigning for the Kerry last election and I was given an "Asian Americans for Kerry Sign" and I thought about making a sign saying 'Texan for Kerry.' I was told not to because in MN that would cost Kerry votes. Whoops I mentioned something political. To the D & D we go!
Why does anyone care if anyone else likes it here? For all the people who <3 NYC, there are plenty more who think it is the ******* of the earth. For all the people who think LA is God's gift to the US, there are just as many who think that satan himself planned and developed So Cal. If people don't like it, great. That means more of it for me.
You know since I grew up in Houston and have since lived in many other cities by choice, I'm not the biggest backer in the world. I'm never moving back and I only visit when I have to. And as S.Chang has correctly observed, most people from out of town react with horror (a uniform complaint among first time visitors is the scenically hideous drive in from IAH on 45 past all of the hubcap stores, fleabag motels, low rent strip clubs & strip malls, etc. is a nasty omen). But I still defend it when people trash it somewhat - generally against certain other poser cities like Dallas or Atlanta. I'm not going to ever try to defend it against New York or San Francisco or anything like that, that's a losing battle. But if in defending it I can take a crap on Dallas then I will gladly do so. Houston kind of sucks, but a lot of those other new school places suck just as badly and are more expensive.
In my opinion, we really screwed up putting Intercontinental where it is. What needs to be done is to make The Hardy Toll Road the ONLY way to and from that airport. This would not be a difficult thing to do, and would vastly improve our cities' image.
SoCal really was planned by Satan. Why else do you think they're stealing all of the water from NorCal.
I love Houston. Every summer time when I was a kid, going to Houston meant Summer Vacation. We went to Houston every summer for a little while before traveling else where in the world. (I grew up in Saudi) I love heading back. I can't wait to drive down and eat James Connie Island, and go to Stros games. Houston temperatures aren't really that hot to me, considering I grew up on the Saudi East Coast.
No matter if I ever move out of the area later on in my life, I'll always be a Houstonian first/foremost. I have spent every year of my soon to be 22 year old life here except for the 3 years at UT-Austin for college. Granted, my family resides in Katy, but I consider myself a Houstonian. And as far as the weather goes, I despise cold weather so Houston weather suits me just fine.
Houston controls most of the oil and a ton of the imports for the country. Basically, we let the rest of the country operate with our approval. The rest of the United States is pretty much Houston's b!tch.
