The major problem with JVG is that he coaches his system. We do not have players that fit into a defense first scheme system, except for Asik of course. The first thing that JVG would install is a half court game, a run the shot clock down game. And how well would that fit with the Rockets current roster? It would suck, wasting the incredible offensive talents of Harden. JVG also depends on an offensive talent that can break the defense down. McGrady spent years playing hero ball. Does anyone actually want Harden to play hero ball more than he already is doing? The Rockets defense is currently 22nd in the league. The offense is what, 5th? The defense of young teams steadily improves over time with appropriate coaching and the growing familiarity and comfort level of the players on the court. Next season I would think that the defense will evolve to around the 15th best in the league. That, plus minimal offensive improvement would certainly mean that the Rockets will be more competitive next season. The Rockets are lucky to have a coach that will base the game strategies on the strength of the personnel. Well no not lucky. McHale was hand picked by Morey. Luck had nothing to do with it.
A) Van Gundy never won a series for us, and was so boring to watch it took a couple years off my life B) McHale has the most exciting offense in the NBA, and it's efficient. Now, if only I could watch Rox games for it to matter...
I would take McHale and the offense 10 times out of 10 over outdated, old, primitive Van Gundy boring lame ball. Van Gundy's coaching style is almost 20 years outdated.
The difference is that we have more players that can play 'hero ball' and it wouldn't be 100% reliant on one guy like it was with Tracy. Lin > Rafer's tear drop and the other PGs and Parsons > Battier in terms of going 'hero ball'. The real problem would be JVG's willingness to trade Lin and Parsons and any other young player for some old vet that he likes for some strange reason. None of the young guys would ever play off the bench. You really think JVG would be down with trading TD leaving Beverly who just came up from the DLeague as the only backup point guard? He'd probably quit.
