I heard the samething. If you can put weight on it, it isn't broken. I'd still get it checked out though.
Sonny, a really bad ankle sprain (the crutches for 3 weeks, no sports for 60-90 day kind) would leave you black and blue from the bottom of your foot to about 1"-2" up. Even that might not have a break in it, and would heal 100%, assuming no reinjury. You would have busted a bunch of capillaries, and all the blood would drain to the bottom, leaving you with a huge bruise that makes everyone think you broke something. (That's what happened to me on the court when I was about your age.) Both types would have made a popping sound and dropped you fast (at least for your first time). You look fine to me...you wimp. no seriously, let it heal 100%, then just run on it, and do not play basketball for at least 10-14 days. Why risk reinjury? It's not worth making something chronic.
that's the kind of one that took me out for around 3 months or so. The black and blue went from the bottom of the foot all the way to an inch or so above my ankle. I heard no popping when it happened though. Now I'm always scared even when its just a lil tweak. Just stay off it for a while Sonny. Icy Hot, ice, aleeve, all to help the swelling go down. And ya, at least give it a couple of weeks. Even if it heals relatively quickly, it'll still be weak, and primed for another injury.
yeah, I didn't do anything for 3 mos, and just did running for another month or so to restrengthen it. I was determined never to reinjure that. I couldn't believe how much blood there was...it almost looked like my foot was decaying or diseased.... I always thought ankle sprains that sidelined guys for months were for wimps...until that. maybe that's what they call the "high ankle sprain."
At the least that's a 3rd degree ankle sprain which can be worse than a break. Get that checked out quick to find out whether you may have actually torn the ligament and from the looks of things you probably have at least a small break.
I sprained my ankle bad like that in February going down the stairs in my dorm. Hurt really bad and made climbing into my loft a pain. Like some of the others, it took my sprain about two and a half months to heal. I've been told since then that I shouldn't have used Icy Hot on it, just good old ice, but I did anyway and I thought it made it somewhat more tolerable. I'd also recommend a good ankle brace, mine helped me get through having to walk to class everyday. Whoever said that if you can walk on it, it ain't broken is lying. I broke the cuboid in my left foot while running during high school band practice (don't ask); after I broke it I finished running my lap, marched backwards (pretty much running on my tip toes at 140 beats a minute) on it for ten minutes, then decided that maybe I had a problem and went home. When I went to the doctor for that, he told me there was really nothing he could do for me and sent me home. I would imagine that you'll get pretty much the same response from your doctor about your sprain, but it certainly doesn't hurt giving him a visit - I could very easily be mistaken about everything I just said.
I had a sprain ankle a little bigger and a little bluer than this one. It took me 6 months to fully heal. Stay off of it as much as possible(aka don't play more ball) and soon enough you will be back. p.s. you would have been better off breaking it.
I forgot to mention that it looks like it hurts. Please forgive my previous post for being all business.
Tore tendons (or ligaments I can't remember which) about 15 years ago in the same location on my right foot while playing football. I spent 6 months in a cast but didn't need surgery. Go see your doctor. And like DaDakota said... trim your toe nails.
I just found out last week that what I had supposed was an ankle sprain almost 20 years ago was, in fact, a fracture. Now I'm stuck with residual damage from lack of treatment. I would advise ponying up and going to the doctor.
Thanks guys! I've got insurance, I'm going at 3:45 today. As for the toenails, that's another subject, I get bad ingrown toenails on my big toe so I don't cut my toenails anymore until they get realllly long. But I make up for it by biting my fingernails.
Well it went good, thanks for asking. I got some anti-inflams and some pain medicine. She said it would take 24-48 for the xrays, but its probably just badly strained. Elevate Ice/Heat It's kinda cool, catching up on all my movies/games.
Anytime I ever roll my ankles, and get a sprain I make sure to apply as much pressure around the sprain so it doesn't well when my shoes are off, and it's not held in tight around my shoes. I normally wrap it up in one of those big bandages that you can wrap around your foot a few times. Keep it on all night, Ice it, heat it. Soak it in warm water, and cold water. Change into another bandage that not so wet or anything. And repeat til you feel like you can walk on it, and any bruising is either gone, or has changed colors to like green or yellow indicating that the bruise is pretty much gone.
Not broken says the doc, good news I guess.... Still swollen and hurts, can't walk on it much. Pain pills are the best. Updated pics for those freaks who care. http://www.sonnysims.com/bustedankle.htm
