Other than Dwight Howard, is Morey any good at chasing free agents?

The rockets' GM/Coach don't have a proven track record of winning as leaders like Pat Riley or Doc Rivers. Players only care about money and rings so they gravitate towards the people that they feel can give them both.

That was not during this season. When they got Bellinelli we got Howard, Im pretty sure you prefer having Howard to having Bellinelli?

So again which free agent did the Spurs get? I do agree that I wouldnt have mind geting Butler or Granger for the current contract they have this year. However I can see why they chose for those teams (bigger role than they would have gotten here, and better chance at a championship).

Also Big baby has a player option of 1.4 M for next year. Do you want to pay him that money next year, and lose the chance of getting a free agent this summer? On top of that I do not want Davis taking minutes from Jones Asik or D-Mo

It is clear for everybody (maybe except you) that Morey wants to hold his flexibility and not give the flexibility up for a veteran who might or might not contribute and would hurt the development of our young players (which we need to play so they either contribute and develop in a good player of other teams can see their potential).

Howard, Asik, Casspi, Beverley, Pittman, Lin, Covington, Daniels is probably the best collection if free agents outside Miami.

It's a double-edged sword with Morey's style. One day he went to the Chuck E Cheese's to shop for free agents, and he came home with Dwight Howard. This time he goes to the local Cici's and nabs Dexter Pittman.

You have to take in consideration that terrible Lin contract. I'm sure we'd have a better chance of getting a above average FA if it weren't for Lin[s ridiculous contract taking up space. It's obvious we need help benchwise, but Morey chose to stay put near the deadline. If not having a bench ends up losing us a playoff series then Morey needs to own up to his mistake in the offseason.

It's never been about Morey, but rather what Houston can offer a free agent.

It's not as sexy as NY or LA. It wasn't a destination for getting a ring. There was no Pat Riley, no PJ, no promise of a ring that a big name could see. Morey was a GM who hadn't accomplished anything.

But now, it's s different story.

He's hot. Morey is a mini-celebrity GM. Morey got Dwight Howard. More has James Harden. Morey knows what he is doing.

It's just a different ball game.

Off season free agents pick teams that are going to give them money and get them a ring. In season free agents pick teams that are going to give them playing time and get them a ring.

This offseason Morey got Dwight and then couldn't really sign anyone else because he didn't have the full MLE to play with or any other cap space. He had to bargain hunt.

For the inseason guys that have been released and what not, the Rockets are a team on the rise to be sure, but if you were a veteran free agent signing what is basically a 1 year minimum deal this season to win a ring, would you really pick Houston over the Clippers? (Setting your fandom aside)

The Rockets just put this team together this offseason and now are going to start filling it out in the coming offseason. Once your team is basically complete, that's when the veterans start latching on to win a ring. Veterans are generally not looking to sign for cheap to help a team that isn't a title contender without them become one, they want to go to a team that is already knocking on the door.

This is partly why I can't see Morey punting on this offseason to hold cap space for the following year's class. You have to get the roster filled out with better players or your window will close on you faster than it should.
