Savage should have carried one of the cheerleaders off the field on his shoulder, like Macho Man used to do with Miss Elizabeth.
All that money on the bench instead of on the field. Somebody gotta get fired..... Is it Rick....even tho Assweiler was McNair's pick? If Rick survives this one, he will NEVER get fired. But again.....Assweiler was McNairs pick....but owner won't fire himself and somebody gotta be scapegoat.
I remember when Peyton replaced Brock last year. The other offensive players instantly had a noticable pep in their step that was missing with Brock playing. The same exact thing happened today and it's troubling.
There was a huge difference with Tom Savage out there. Deandre Hopkins had struggled mightily all season long but when Tom Savage entered the game, we finally see Hopkins of last year. Brock Osweiler is a tough QB to be successful with for receivers. What made Brock so bad is his reads are horrible, and his throws are highly inaccurate. The thing that makes it worst is Brock keeps throwing those fast bullet passes, which is only effective if the QB is accurate, and he's far from that. Tom Savage throws are much more accurate and though he still has lots to learn, his pass gives receivers a chance to make a play on the ball, meaning our receivers have a chance to catch it even if its inaccurate. Tom Savage was not perfect throwing the ball, but even on his inaccurate throws, receivers still has a good chance to catch it. With Brock Osweiler, when he throws his patented inaccurate bullet passes, it greatly reduces our receiver's chance of catching it. His throws to our receivers are either way over the top of their heads, overthrows long balls that usually ends up deep out of bounds, or his favorite, throwing his patented bullet passes straight into the defender's chest and not our receivers. It seems like Brock hits defender's in the chest more often than he do with our receivers. It sucks that we're even in this situation. Rick Smith and Bill O'Brien are incredibly dense by not attempting to address the QB issue years ago, even before they signed Fitzpatrick. They both refused to address a critical QB problem for years and then decides to panic when they realized that they do have a QB problem. The major concern with this franchise moving forward is our head coach and general manager inability to evaluate QB. I know finding a good QB is tough but given their history and the group of QBs Bill O'Brien brought in, its clear that they have no clue on how to evaluate QB. They would probably go back to their original bandaid style plan of plucking a backup free agent QB off the market hoping he would become the next franchise QB and maybe draft a QB in the 4th to 7th round every other year.
I hope its Rick Smith. He's been everything but impressive and he's brought mediocre to this team for over a decade. He proved incapable of evaluating talent and turning this franchise around. Three years ago after the Matt Schaub 2-14 season meltdown, the Texans were in a semi-rebuild mode where they could rebuild certain areas but also have the talent to compete for a playoff spot. They were only a few vital pieces away from turning them into a true playoff contender while the Raiders were in full rebuild mode. Three years later, the Raiders transcend from a bad struggling lottery team to a playoff contender with a bright future, while the Texans who had a brighter outlook three seasons ago, is still in the same position with the same problems because their GM and Coach refused to address the issue years ago and now it rear it's ugly head. The Texans have no one to blame but Rick Smith, Bill O'Brien and even McNair for being incompetent and foolishly stubborn
Osweiler just isn't an NFL-caliber starting QB. People were so enamored with his height that they overlooked how much he sucks.
NFL QB is a tough position to gauge; How many QB's can start for any team and how many are "System QB's" in today's NFL. This Defense is so good just don't thrown INT and work the field position to your benefit. Osweiler just can't do it.
Could we cut Osweiler? Or would our only real option be to have a $17 million backup if Savage keeps balling?
I have to assume Savage will start next week? The offense certainly looked more assured and less like a ticking time bomb with him at the helm.
