Both Ken Rosenthal and Jon Heyman reporting the Rangers want Oswalt too but it is considered a long shot. If the Astros end up good as a result of trading Roy to the Cardinals, no one is going to care in a couple of years. If the Astros continue to suck, the fans aren't going to happy regardless of where Roy goes. The ONLY focus of the front office should be to get the best players possible. Roy simply isn't the franchise face and the Cardinals simply aren't the franchise rival that would make anyone care one way or another.
This. It would hurt a *lot* more to see him in a Braves uni, but even that wouldn't be a very bitter pill if the Astros returned to decency in the next three years.
I'd have to agree. I enjoyed the rivalry we shared with the Cardinals. I never hated them(at least post Mcgwire), but respected them and don't mind them winning the division if it isn't going to be the Astros. The Cubs and Braves though I have an utter hatred for. I'd only root for either team to make the playoffs so I could see them both fail again.
in fox sports it says that the rangers might still go after oswalt even though they have acquired cliff lee. that move would easily make them if they aren't now championship contenders. http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/MLB-latest-news-from-July-070110
make no mistake about it: the Rangers are absolutely championship contenders. i watch that team play quite a bit on FSSW...they're really impressive. solid team.
Isn't this also how the Sox got cursed? Giving their best player to their rival? Yes, the situation is different, as we would be getting something back and the Astros have done nothing prior to this move, but in the grand scheme of planetary alignment and balance of the elements, I'm not sure I would like such a move. Of course the Astros already did this when they traded Joe Morgan to the Reds in the 70's, so maybe they are already cursed...
Of course we gave up the most Randy Johnson > Neagle/Harden/Appier/Cone and even Schilling. The writer failed to include Mark Mulder, who netted the A's Dan Haren and Kiko Calero. Then they could have included Dan Haren to the Dbacks which netted the A's Brett Anderson, Carlos Gonzalez, and one of their top current prospects in Chris Carter.
@SI_JonHeyman: Phillies and Dodgers appear to be most active pursuers of star Astros pitcher Roy Oswalt. Cardinals and Rangers interested
I don't mind asking for "the moon" on Roy but Lance??? Come on now, the guy is a below avg hitter at 1st base this season and is in obvious decline. Like I mentioned in the game thread, I hope they move him and he gets his second wind because he will only get worse with the Stros. Edit - Take that back, he is a below avg hitter PERIOD. You take out that 5 games stretch last month and he is horrible.
Yeah, I guess just part of Drayton's plan to keep him an Astro for life. Oh wait... Surely they won't be picking up that option will they?!
You know if Lance is still around and tears up triple A pitching in September, they will pick up that option noting his "late surge" as a springboard for 2011. Heck, I wouldn't be suprised if they worked out an extension LOLOLOL.
