I don't get why trading Oswalt in the division is a big deal. The Astros are going to suck for the next 2-3 years while Oswalt still is pitching. At this point, I wouldn't mind getting a package that doesn't include Shelby Miller. Sure I want Miller, but I wouldn't a package like Eduardo Sanchez, Allen Craig, Daryl Jones, and Daniel Descalso.
The other issue the Astros run into with St. Louis is that they don't really NEED him. Philly needs help. St. Louis already has 2 Cy-Young caliber SPs and a great rookie 3rd starter. So while Roy helps them, they probably are willing to give up less for him than a team that needs an ace.
If it's the Cards then I'd almost rather hold on to him for a while longer then get some type of package not including Shelby Miller. If Roy pushes the organzation into a corner then let it be Miller, Craig, Sanchez that would do it for me, either way Wade is going to get blasted.
I agree. The Cards don't have a lot of good prospects other than Miller. At this point, I really want to to move Oswalts salary and reinvest that money to sign draft picks Adam Plutka, Jacoby Jones, and some international free agents.
WTF??? LOL...This is starting to sound a lot like the Bosh rumor mill, I think i'll stay on the sidelines till this plays out but agree with rikesh, moving him for the salary alone may be worth it but I'd still want at least one nice prospect to go along with it.
I don't agree with this way of thinking. Astros are not going to contend for at least 2-3 years. Myers is having a good season and his value will never be higher. I think you can get at least two mid level prospects for Myers.
If that's the case, I'd rather hang onto him and try to deal him in the offseason like Halliday last year. I'd much rather blast Wade for hanging on to Roy and do what's best for the Astros rather than blasting him for caving and not getting the right package of players back just to trade him now.
@jcrasnick: Just to make it clear: Roy Oswalt will not approve any trade unless his $16M option for 2012 is picked up. #trades @jcrasnick: Cardinals. Phillies. The team doesn't matter. That part is pretty much non-negotiable. #trades @jcrasnick: When Oswalt talked about "restructuring,'' he meant he might be willing to defer a part of the money. But that was it. #trades and to the begin we go again....
Of course, we still have no idea which is right. Roy has said all sorts of things throughout this process.
That's true, if conjecture didn't exist we'd have nothing to talk about. I'm just going off the televised interview when the words he spoke were (essentially) that money would not hold a deal up and that he wouldn't do anything that is bad for him or bad for the Astros. I felt a lot better about his attitude in this based on that interview. Yes, I'm sure that was part of the plan behind the interview, but it worked on me.
I blame twitter, love the dam thing but it has blown reality away with all the difference sources coming out being so public. Same thing with the Bosh/Wade/James crap, rumors were flying from every direction that who the hell knew what was going on.
Well, like the news and reality TV, it gives a forum and a voice to a lot of people that shouldn't have one. Just because you can tweet, doesn't mean you should.
His quote in there is: "The money part, I can work out with anybody," he said. "We can work on doing different things to restructure whatever they want to do. The biggest thing is making it work for both of us." He didn't say he would drop the 2012 option here - just that he can restructure it in different ways. It sounds from there that he still expects to get at least some of the money from the option.
Am just gonna stop reading everything about Oswalt until the 31st, a lot of people are making stuff up and I have a hard time believing Oswalt won't go to Philly who's going to contend for the next 4 to 5 years
The thing I took from it is that he is amiable to changing the contract & such to make the trade work. Crasnick is making it sound like he's being a jerk, and I don't think that's the case.
I agree, The Phillies are in position to contend for a quite a long time and are a proven organization. I know the media is tough in Philly but I would think Roy would be up for the challenge and if they win he would be looked upon as the main reason they overtook the Braves, sadly if these reports are accurate then I'd been wrong about Oz.
