In addition to the fact that scouts want to see details, he's coming off an ankle injury that has to be looked at.
jaysonst Hearing the price tag on Oswalt has actually been going up in last 24 hours. So does Drayton McLane want to deal him or not? Just askin'
unless he wants to get run out by an angry mob with pitchforks he better.. we need elite prospects and fast.
It could be because so many teams are inquiring on him, who knows. You'd be stupid to sell cheap when the demand is high.
It would also be stupid to trade him for a subpar deal when the Astros will have multiple opportunities to trade him down the line. (Offseason and trade deadline next year)
The demand isn't going to be as high in the offseason so it's unlikely you'll get a better deal then. And if he has a season like he had in 2009 next year, the demand could be less then too. Other than wins, this could be one of Roy's best overall seasons. It'd be hard for him to do better next year than he is right now.
Actually, you greatly increase the number of teams who might be interested in fitting in a $16 mil annual salary at a point in time when teams haven't finalized their salary/roster for the upcoming season yet. Of course you don't get anybody falling over themselves for him, desperately overpaying for him to put them over the top for the stretch run, but it doesn't look like anybody is doing that right now, either.
Actually there would be more teams to choose from in the offseason. This is because more teams believe they have a legit shot at the World Series in the offseason as opposed to the middle of the season.
jaysonst Astros, Tigers, Rays, Red Sox & Pirates all had scouts in attendance at Phillies-Rockies today. Pretty sure they didn't come for the weather #Cardinals #Dodgers #Phillies #Yankees sent scouts to Astros game with Oswalt starting.
While true, teams are also less desperate during the offseason. At the deadline, you know you're just 2 months away from a potentially great season, so you're more willing to take a risk on top tier player. There are enough teams in the race right now that there's plenty of a market. There's not really anyone that would get involved in the bidding in the offseason that's not interested right now.
Ubaldo had a terrible game today. I think he's hoping that Roy doesn't do that with all the scouts in attendance. But I don't think the scouts care as much about the results as his ankle and things like that. No team is going to increase or decrease his value based on one performance.
Well Ubaldo gave up 6 runs in 2 innings and was awful....I was just hoping Roy is better than that so his value would go up
I see. I was thinking from the scouting angle. Yea, I don't think today will have much of an impact, if any.
Phillies don't have to find someone to take Werth before they can take on the salary. The Mets weren't interested because of their budget. It becomes easier for the Dodgers. I bet if I really look, I can find a ton of other teams who would find an offseason trade infinitely more palatable. I think if you look at the expensive veteran front-line starters to get traded in the last several years (among guys that weren't in the last season of their contract), many more are traded in the offseason than at the in-season deadline. Peavey, Halladay, Haren and Johan Santana were all guys who were traded in the offseason. Guys like Sabathia and Lee (this year) were in the last year of their contract. The only violation of this rule that I can think of is Lee last year. I'm sure there are more, but the fact is, expensive front line pitchers seem to be traded more often in the offseason, unless they have no long term contract.
I was thinking... if the Rays want a right fielder. Why don't we offer Hunter for a Brignac, Davis or a good prospect (two out of those three).
