That would be a great package to get for Oswalt. I didn’t realize Chris Davis was only 24 years old. I thought he was much older since he is been in the bigs since 2008. They really don’t need him anymore since they have a stud first baseman in Justin Smoak . Davis strikeouts a ton but the Astros need a first baseman because Berkman in all likely won’t be back next year. If the Astros aren’t willing to add some cash to the deal, they won’t get as good players in return. That would be mistake IMO. Blue Jays added some cash to go along with Halladay and they got a good package of players. Halladay is a better pitcher than Oswalt though. The starting pitching market at the deadline is supposed to be pretty good so that could damper Oswalt’s value a little. I think the one team that could “overpay” for Oswalt is the Rangers because of his relationship with Nolan Ryan.
Scheppers is as top notch a prospect as exists, apparently. But I worry about the idea of structuring a deal around a reliever. Especially one as valuable as Scheppers, especially when the Astros have so many other holes to fill before they can compete again. I think Scheppers is a guy who would have more practical value to a team like the Rangers than he would to the Astros. I would rather they address the more mundane needs with a larger volume of guys that may ultimately have less ceiling or be less of a sure thing.
McLane says Astros willing to absorb contract in trade http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl...(chron.com+-+Top+Stories)&utm_content=Twitter
[rquoter]"When Ed put the team together in December and January, I thought it would be an improvement over the previous year," McLane said. "Lance and Carlos (Lee) and Hunter (Pence) for a time weren't hitting well, and Pedro Feliz hasn't been hitting the way we thought he would."[/rquoter] Drayton with a huge understatement.
Castro coming up has to be the white flag on this version of the Stros. Love Oz, Puma and even Lee but change must happen and it has begun right before our very eyes. If the pickup some of Roy's deal this season then a deal will happen. Really looks like the Rangers are the ready to deal but keep an eye out for the Twins, they need one more arm to be a serious threat to the Yanks/Sox/Rays.
The best part about this whole thing is that we likely will have to wait another month and a half before anything will happen. Slowest. Sports. Summer. Ever.
what? FIFA World Cup NBA biggest free agency in years I mean sports always gets a little bit slow around July but this year we have the world cup until july 11 and then we should have some huge news about NBA free agency. Then by August we are talking about football again.
This is, of course, incredible news if Drayton's serious. By lessening Oswalt's contract, the Astros open up more teams willing to take Oswalt. And more teams willing to give up true prospects for Oswalt. You can actually create a semblance of a bidding war because even smaller market teams can join in the fray.
Oswalt has made it fairly clear he's willing to consider anywhere that's even on the fringe of contention. I don't think that'll be a big problem.
Are you saying the teams Oswalt waived his no-trade clause for all have bundles of cash and don't give a damn about his huge salary? And that he won't go to teams that are tight fiscally? That doesn't seem to be the case according to the stuff I've read. But I may be wrong. If so, can you give some articles to support your statement? Thank you.
One of the reporters for the Star Tribune wrote about some recent 'ace' pitcher deadline deals and where the players received are currently situated. ------------ 7/31/09 - The White Sox acquired Jake Peavy from the San Diego Padres in exchange for Aaron Poreda (AAA), Clayton Richard (MLB), Adam Russel (AAA), and Dexter Carter (Lo A). 7/29/09 - Cliff Lee was traded to the Phillies from Cleveland for Carlos Carrasco (AAA), Jason Knapp (Lo A), Jason Donald (AAA) and Lou Marson (AAA). 7/17/08 - Joe Blanton was traded from Oakland to Philadelphia for Adrian Cardenas (Hi A), Josh Outman (and Matt Spencer (Hi A). 7/8/08 - The Cubs acquired Rich Harden (and Chad Gaudin) from Texas for reliever Sean Gallagher (MLB), Matt Murton (MLB), Eric Patterson (AAA) and Josh Donaldson (Lo A). 7/7/08 - Cleveland traded CC Sabathia to the Milwaukee Brewers for Matt LaPorta (AA), Rob Bryson (Lo A), Zach Jackson (AAA) and Michael Brantley (AA). ----------------- http://www.startribune.com/sports/t...qyP4O:DW3ckUiD3aPc:_Yyc:aULPQL7PQLanchO7DiUss
Not a big deal but LaPorta and Brantley are at AAA Columbus. They haven't even been in AA this entire season. LaPorta got sent down recently to get more ABs. He has a 1.219 OPS over those 13 games. Still hasn't been able to break through at the next level. Brantley was only in the majors for a few games early in the year. I just knew those 2 off the top of my head. It makes me wonder about the accuracy of all the other information.
Actually, I just skimmed over that section in your link. I'm guessing that's where the players were situated at the times of the trades.
I read the article wrong. It is not their current situation, but where they were when the trades occurred.
SI_JonHeyman heard #astros telling teams are willing to pay a bit of oswalt's contract, depending on what they get back in return
