it seems like i read somewhere that no pitcher had ever won a cy young w/ less than 17 wins, so i guess this would be the lowest win total ever...could be wrong....
I'm sure some relievers won with a bunch of saves instead of wins. Seems like Rick Sutcliffe also won in the early 80's with the Cubs, with fewer than 17 wins (against 1 loss).
9 relievers have won it. Sutcliffe went 16-1 in & won it in '84. The strike shortened seasons of '81 & '94 also had winners with less than 17 wins.
Trevor Hoffman was way the trendy choice and he should have been 4th. He's had a few BETTER years than last year's arguably, though he almost got it in '98 finishing 2nd. I'da liked to have seen Oswalt get it and wonder what else he's needing to do but he's still had a decent share of recognition in the voting. He's been in the top 5 in the voting 4 of last 5 years (2003 was injured, still 10-5 record). So either he's getting snubbed every year or they recognize him as one of the best, which is what I'll go with
