Penn did not win for DMW. He may be smug, but he is one of the best actors of his generation and was great in Mystic River (as was Robbins). I thought Bill Murray--I guy who I always liked his comedic roles, was great too, but if if I had to choose I would go with Penn because it was simply a more powerful performance. TLR tiology was fanastic, I think the 1st two movies were better than ROTK, but what the heck, I guess they had to wait to the end. If had my way Twin Towers would have kicked Chicago's ass than then Clint/Mystic (very worthy IMO) could have taken big honors this year, but the academy bungled it last year and left them no room. I need to see 21 grams and In America, havn't see Cold Mountain and from what ya'll say I don't plan to rush too. Last Samuri did not deserve serious consideration. It was better than the completely overrated Gladiator, but did not stack up with the best.
Not the biggest ever, but not bad at all: http://www.cnn.com/2004/SHOWBIZ/Movies/02/29/box.office.reut/index.html
Just think of what would've happened had Miramax kept the rights and done the version of LOTR they were talking about doing. You'd all agree with Nomar if that had happened.
Actually, there are some pretty neat animated versions out there. The Hobbit and The Return of the King were done by Jules Bass and Arthur Rankin Jr., and Ralph Bakshi did one called the Lord of the Rings, which was really kind of the Fellowship of the Ring and most of the Two Towers. The Bass/Rankin ones are definitely targeted at a younger audience, but the music is fantastic. The Ralph Bakshi movie is very dark and reminded me quite a bit of the Peter Jackson version.
I was a big fan of the books, and didn't hate the films, but to me, they got gradually worse. I was very bored during ROTK, and that's my favourite book of the trilogy. Kind of ironic that the worst one of the lot won all the Oscars. Mind you, winning those stopped meaning anything when Forrest Gump won. Oh, and on the radio here, there has been discussion about the fact that the three films didn't get a single award for the actors... rightly, in my opinion. There were no standout performances, and Sean Astin and Elijah Wood were painful to watch at times.
I thought Sean did great in 3, not so much in the first two. You didn't even like Ian McKellan in 1 & 2? his role in 3 seemed pretty diminished (i guess since all his scenes with Chris Lee were cut) but I thought he made a wonderful Gandalf.
I'm so glad PJ (and LOTR) won. They've been working on the filme since about '93 or so. Nomar, I don't think you realise just how hard it is to adapt a screenplay (especially one of LOTR proportions), let alone write an original one. Suck it up, and let it go.
Sir Ian was pretty good as Gandalf, but he is such an excellent actor, and that role really just required him to camp it up really. He could do a part like that in his sleep. I think Sean Astin's accent bugged me, and I just didn't feel the chemistry between those two characters that leaps of the page in the books. The special effects were pretty good, but the film itself had pacing issues, in my opinion, and "The scouring of the Shire" was dropped for that ending? I was really excited to see this film, and came away thinking "That's it?". Overall, an average film. I understand that all of the Oscars are really for the trilogy, rather than the one film, but I just found it ironic that the worst one of the three gets the most awards.
I didn't like the way she looked that night either. She normally looks a lot better but last night she looked like plastic woman.
Yea, Charlize is at the top of my list of great-looking women but of the few minutes that I watched last night, she looked like she was trying to be some kind of deranged vampire flapper from the 1920's - she definitely looks better than that. I wish someone would tell her, whether it is her jabroni fiance Townsend or someone else, to just look normal and you will be the best looking woman at the place. BTW - of the few minutes I did see, I was impressed with Tim Robbins' acceptance speech and loved Billy Crystal's ragging of Clint Eastwood.
I would agree with this, although I thought the second was the worst. Regardless, both were a lot worse than the first one, in my opinion.
Well, I got 17 out of 22 in an office Oscar pool. Be curious to see how I did in the pool today ... Could've had 19 of 22 but I got cute and picked upsets for Supporting Actress and Adapted Screenplay.
I would have liked to have seen Andy Serkis nominated for best supporting actor, and I was a little disappointed that Benicio Del Toro didn't win that category. LOTR deserved all of it's awards, except for maybe best song - all the songs were kinda "meh...". Oh, and Nomar deserves an award for: "Most Outspoken Critic of a Movie in an Annoying Role". I think PJ did a fabulous job. I would have loved to have seen "The Scouring of the Shire" instead of the long drawn out endings, but you can't get everything you want, I guess.
Well, LOTR is done and over, so I'm hoping it won't have to come up anymore on this BBS. A few last comments... An example of what I'm talking about when I say overrated is the IMDB top 250 list. And also what Dakota said. "Peter Jackson's LOTR trilogy of movies has become the best trilogy of all time...beating out the Godfather trilogy...again..IMHO." That right there sums up the idiocy regarding the LOTR movies. RE: the screenplay. I'm not talking about doing justice to the books. But the writing was horrid. The award isn't for "how well you adapted something that was hard to do, so if you did a poor job you still deserve the award since LOTR is hard to adapt". It's for the "Best Screenplay, that was adapted from something else." RE: awarding all three movies. The awards last night were for movies in 2003. Not the best three movies from 2001-2003. Period. To award a movie based on the previous two entries in its trilogy is absurd. If you hold to that, Godfather 3 should have won best picture. RE: acting in LOTR. It was horrible. Thank god it didnt even get nominated for any acting awards this year. Another example of the BS of the Best Picture win. When Titanic won it didn't get any acting awards either. What does that tell you? Both were not very good movies. Acting is CRITICAL. Think on that for a minute. Anyway, I will try not to post about LOTR anymore because I realize it irritates many, many, people. 21 Grams is still the best movie of 2003.
I think the first two Godfathers surely helped Part III get nominated for Best Picture. In a weaker year (like this one was), it might well have won, but it was up against Dances With Wolves, Goodfellas, Ghost and Awakenings. As got 21 Grams, if Academy Awards are important to you, feel good that it was nominated at all. There are very few years when my favorite movie of the year is even nominated.
you can't help but try to get the last word in Nomar, Lol you said Charlie's Angels 2 was a good movie, that sayz all that there needs to be said about your movie critic skillz
