excuse me for not being a movie geek god of all knowledge.... what is the differernce between the screenplay and the adapted screenplay....and why does Nomar think that the LOTR screenplay is bad? my meager understanding about this is that it has something to do with the Tolkien books...how far offbase am I here?
I revise my earlier statement... two things we agree on... or maybe I meant that what you posted earlier is the first Rockets related thing we agree on..
Really, I would think 11 Oscars would speak for itself. When a movie (or series) generates that much success, there's bound to be a group of people who scream "overrated!" Such is the nature of the beast. Personally, I DO think Titanic was overrated, but I can't deny that it was a very good movie. Determining if a movie is overrated is in the eye of the beholder. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. ... But when a film goes 11 for 11 and also wins Best Picture, give the freaking movie a little more credit besides the tried and true defense of . Is that too much to ask? Honestly...
Don't know if it's been mentioned, but Peter Jackson just said in the press room (it's streaming at www.oscar.com) that he plans to start filming on King Kong in December.
I agree with much of what you said about overrated being in the eye of the beholder. LOTR were very good movies, but i think that many think they are overrated because fans think the movies are amoung the best ever. Look no further than imdb.com 's top movies to see this. They are not 3 of the top 10 movies ever.
I can't speak for Nomar, but the difference between adapted screenplay and original screenplay is just what the name implies. Adapted screenplays are adapted from other works (books, plays, what-have-you), while original screenplays are written directly for the screen.
They are GREAT GREAT movies. Heck...Titanic was great. This year the ROTK was the ONLY Oscar worthy movie...the rest were merely good...IMHO. Peter Jackson's LOTR trilogy of movies has become the best trilogy of all time...beating out the Godfather trilogy...again..IMHO. DD
Thanks mrpaige, knew I could depend on you for a easy explanation. ok...so in saying that ROTK's screenplay win was laughable....he is basically saying the adaptation of the books was bad... Im not sure I would agree....Considering how many changes other book to movie adaptations have undergone...I thought they did a pretty good job of it... but then again...Im probably misunderstanding... oh screw it..Ill stick to what I know...anyone have a computer problem?
I'm sure they are all very good movies. I cannot argue that ROTK wasn't the best picture this year. I just disagree with using the fact that it won 11 Oscars as justification for an opinion. As if that says, "I'm right. It is the best movie ever. It won the most Academy Awards ever", which is exactly what some people will do. It's just something that always strikes me as funny. I've seen so many people completely discount the Oscars when their favorite movies don't get nominated (and this happens quite often with those who most ardently support the LOTR series. Name a fanboy who considers "Ordinary People" the best movie of 1980. I sure don't), but when one gets nominated and wins, the win is used as a justification of the opinion about the movie.
It isn't insane at all. Original screenplay would have been off, yes, but those three books are quite overwhelming; to turn them into movies that worked in widespread release is no small feat. Anyhow, while I liked ROTK, it wasn't my favorite of the three. All these Oscars are clearly for the body of work of the trilogy as a whole.
The Godfather trilogy won two Best Pictures, though. Of course, the woman who won Best Screenplay tonight is widelty credited with ruining The Godfather, Part III. I can't get over that Coppola family. Is there anyone in that family without an Academy Award now? There were two of 'em up for Oscars tonight alone. I count at least eight among them (Francis Ford has five. Sophia now has one. Carmine has one. And Nic Cage has one. Add to that nominations for Talia Shire and John Schwartzman).
well.....DUH! there aint no way in hell you can take every bit of the books and make them into a movie that normal people will sit thru. Tolkien geeks like me will...but you cant recoup the costs of a movie trilogy like this by catering to Tolkien geeks. they did as well as can be expected..and this is coming from a huge fan of the series...I first read them almost 30 years ago...and have re-read them dozens of time since. anyway...thanks for your time mp..appreciate it.
the fact that the no one has never even attempted to adapt the books into a movie should tell you how difficult the adaptation was. add to the fact that jackson clearly made that adaptation into one of the greatest trilogies of all time should once again tell you how deserving ROTK was of its' award. and all of this should tell you that Nomar has absolutely no idea what he's talking about and that he should give his LOTR bashing a freaking rest.
I beileve i just heard on the news earlier that The Passion of Christ just broke the record for biggest opening weekend.
by the way does anyone find the way charlize theron looks good? meaning the way she looks like she got trapped in a tanning bed for way too long. i can understand someone getting a fake tan here and there, but when they start looking orange i think it looks really icky.
