Ugh. ROTK. It wasn't bad, just very, very, overrated. I think Mystic River deserved to win over it. And 21 Grams deserved it over all of the films nominated. Oh well.
Did Peter Jackson just say he directed Bad Taste? I haven't seen any of the LOTR movies, but Bad Taste was awesome. He deserves to win just for that.
LOTR is just getting the benefits of the entire trilogy, not just this past movie. Kinda like aging sports stars getting FAT contracts, when they're well past their primes. They're getting paid for what they did throughout their careers, and LOTR is getting rewarded for the entire span it took to film all three movies.
so was LOTR only nominated for 11? i know spielberg said it was a clean sweep but i didn't know if that was literal or just figurative for how much they've won. i thought i heard they were nominated for 11 (and i haven't seen them lose once), and if so, damn. 11 for 11 at the academy awards. i don't really know much about things like sound editing and mixing and the minor awards but for making 3 unbelievable films, they deserve all the academy awards they can get tonight. did titanic and ben hur sweep or were they nomiated for more than 11? edit: i wanted bill murray (just b/c he's so cool) or depp (just b/c that movie was do damn fun) to win but i guess penn isn't a bad choice, even though i didn't see the film all the rave reviews of his performance can't be that wrong. billy crystal with another great performance. just sign him to a lifetime contract to do this thing each year.
Correct about Titanic (14); 11 for Ben-Hur. Now when Passion gets nominated next year, I will be PISSED if it wins anything (besides costume, set, or cinematography). Just watch it win best screenplay; imma be like: WTF??!?!
I'm glad to see that LOTR finally got it's just reward. They only got 6 Oscars combined with the first two films, so this was kind of catchup for the whole trilogy. Plus in my opinion this was a weaker year for movies.
Hold on. I just realized something. ROTK won for best screenplay? Are you ****ing kidding me? Hahahaha. Guys... love ROTK whatever. But recognize...well that's ludicrous! Best Screenplay??? Man, I'm actually laughing at loud just thinking about that. "A diversion." - A line from the best screenplay of 2003.
Bill Murray was robbed! Johnny Depp, too! Ugh, I hate Sean Penn. Such a smug ass. And a standing ovation for him? Puh-leaze. Okay, nomar, it's about time for you to drink your troubles away. I expect a fiery drunken post from you in about 3 hours. I mean, c'mon, the most overrated movie in film history is now TIED for... Most. Oscars. Evah. O, the horror! The horror! Go on. Spin it however you want. The Academy has spoken loud and clear, and they obviously REALLY don't like you.
In case you weren't paying close attention, it won best ADAPTED screenplay, which is taking an existing story, and turning it into a movie, which is not always easy to do. I thought they did a great job of making Tolkien's story for public friendly while still maintaining it's core elements.
I knew it was for adapted screenplay... Big deal. It's still insane. The screenplay was AWFUL. Also, thanks for telling me what an adapted screenplay is. What would I do without your useful information.
Can you really point to it being tied with Titanic to argue against it being overrated? I think there are a whole mess of people who would argue that Titanic was extremely overrated.
