well they know Bynum is fool's gold. He wont look as good elsewhere like he does next to Kobe. Been the pattern for most players who have left LA through trade/FA.
Was the offer Bynum for Howard or was there more? If i was the Magic I would definitely ask for more. Bynum is the second best center but he is injury prone. Lakers need to add another piece to the deal. The only way the Lakers could improve the trade was to involve Gasol. Maybe they can get another team involved and get a cheap PG somehow.
I think sign and trade is the name of the game. They're going to try to make one last run with Dwight, and if he demands to go elsewhere, they can sign and trade to get some value back. And also have a lot of cap room to sign another free agent.
Gasol+Bynum isnt worth Dwight. One guy is soft mentally and the other guy is soft physically (breaks down all the time). Lopez+Brooks+Picks+Make NJ take Turkoglu.
I don't understand why Orlando want up the ante a little bit more for Gasol. The Lakers could use other Magic players, like Nelson (down this year), Anderson, and Reddick.
Two theories: 1) Orlando is determined to play chicken with Dwight. Lopez, Amare, Bynum...swap any of these for Dwight and you've got a 30-win Orlando team. Thanks to the CBA, they have actual leverage in regards to Dwight's next contract. 2) [Conspiracy Theory] I have to wonder if implicitly or explicitly, Orlando's FO has been asked by the league to not facilitate a Dwight move to a major market (a la the Paul veto). LAC is to LAL as NJN is to NYK....
Dwight played his hand when he said Dallas, it's got nothing to do with "big city", it's got to do with who else is there. If he goes FA, to even enter the game, you'll need space to have both D-will and DH, from there it will come down to what the 2 prefer (and i really do think it could well end up a groupthink decision, much like miami, groupthink will also favour the teams that the 2 most think will win them championships)
It's the owner, not Thorpe, when Jerry West was asked whether he'd let Dwight leave or trade him, he said let him leave. why is this relevant? because West is the contemporary of DeVos, it gives a nice insight into what people of that age are thinking. He's way too old and experienced to panic.
Bynum is clumsy and has terrible hands... I wouldn't do a straight up trade neither... If they throw in Gasol and take Turkoglu then I'd do it.... Howard alone > Gasol/Bynum IMO... Don't understand why LA wont just offer both... It's well worth it
This season, I don't agree Howard > Bynum+Gasol. If the Lakers give up both for him, they are further removed from championship contention this season. Kobe's window is closing. You could argue Hedo makes the difference but I don't think much of him. Long term, Lakers would be better off giving up both guys for Howard.
If it wasn't for the injuries, LA wouldn't even be willing to trade Bynum. The Magic aren't going to accept that kind of downside risk with the future of their franchise at stake.
C - Dwight Howard PF - Ryan Anderson SF - Kobe Bryant (or Hedo Turkoglu) SG - JJ Reddick (or Kobe Bryant) PG - Derek Fisher (or Jameer Nelson) - if not the Lakers could also go after Sessions and maybe Calderon (but he's a bit more pricey).
Ryan Anderson and possibly Hedo Turkoglu. Anderson is a quality starter, he'd be regulated to the bench with Gasol and Bynum. While, Turkoglu alone doesn't sweeten the deal on both sides.
I would say given the market right now, Orlando just might be better off hoping Howard resigns. If NJ or LA gets Howard, neither team will be missing the playoffs in the forseeable future. So draft picks would be of limited value. Lopez or Bynum are nice players, but the type that takes your team to 30-40 wins(8th seed or lower lottery pick in the East). Might as well roll the dice instead and hope the hometown contract bonus win out in the end.
Forgive me for not posting a link (because it's on Twitter), but supposedly the Magic will make a hard run at Steve Nash.
