A lot of posters are focusing on what an organization is and not enough on addressing the minority specific factor. I think shasta best summed it up when he said - I'm not suggesting black, hispanic or asian people behave and act in a certain way. But these organizations are. I'm asking these minorities to understand it's the 21st century and the real world is about as diverse as it will ever be. I'm trying to instill some composure and a winner's mentality into these kids. And not getting out of your comfort zone in college establishes this how? Continuing to parade this color specific community on your resume does this how? They subconsciously create the chip-over-my-shoulder vendetta that guys like pouhe and RR harbor and you can see it in their posts. It's emphasizing looking out for "my people" who's struggle only I can understand - and as a result not looking at candidates, or the world, objectively. Don't look past all this because minorities in a tough situation get scholarships they otherwise wouldn't - while that's an important part of these organizations, it's not the sole reason they exist. A wise man once told me, objectivity is the true sign of intellectual progress. Most importantly, Rockets River, in case you missed it the first 2 times... WHAT ARE THE MINORITY SPECIFIC ISSUES THAT WHITE KIDS ATTENDING THE SAME UNIVERSITY WOULD NOT UNDERSTAND???

I KNOW YOU TYPE They are the ones that walk into the Campus Cafeteria and see a table full of black folx and ask . . . WHY ARE THEY SEGREGATING THEMSELVES FROM EVERY ONE ELSE meanwhile The 100 other tables that are all white . . .are not even questioned. I went to that white university I was made to feel like an outsider I was made to feel unwelcomed but tolerated I was made to feel attacked at some points. I received death threats for voicing my opinion in the Campus News Papers. I was dismissed by professors. I had crap thrown on my by the passing truck and called the N-word I was not invited to the 'class study groups' If it was not for black organizations I would have been COMPLETELY AND TOTALLY ON MY OWN. Instead of being defensive and protectionist about American customs, sometimes I MORE wonder where this place of utopian meritocracy is that Ronny resides in? Is a physical place we can visit, is it a mental/philosophical place? I woulnt mind an option out this US hellhole if its out there
Dang, and all this time I always thought my friends (guys) joined NSBE because 70% of the organization consisted of black women, who they got to hang out with at networking events and out of town conferences. I never realized they were just cowards. Silly me.
