Wow...you're really that worried about what people think? I really doubt most people would bother to notice what milk carton you dump on a cash register. Besides, not buying a product because of perceived image is about the same as people buying something to project the image that they're 'more informed.' But isn't the "I don't buy the purified stuff because it's not cleaner than regular" line of thinking pretty much the same thing as the "I don't buy the regular stuff because it's not cleaner than purified" line? You're pretty much doing what they're doing. Making a statement by what you buy (or don't buy). And I thought the problem with that whole Dasani thing was the plant where they bottled the UK line actually was tainted. (as in, not how they usually bottle/filter the stuff) I forget.
You are confusing issues here. The uproar in the UK was over the fact that Dasani was advertised as basically spring water. It is not. Because it is from Coke, it is essentially tap water. Or, Coke without the sugar and caffeine. There are a lot of fake water companies out there that just use municipal water supplies. It doesn't mean that purified water is worse than tap water, as you claimed, it means that Dasani's purified water was worse than tap water in the UK. Not in the US, thogh, they are basically the same. You also mentioned Evian, which is a different animal because it is actual spring water. And, yes, that is better for you. Human bodies were not made to drink all of the extra chemicals, etc. that industrialization had brought. Not that tap water will kill you, of course. Personally, I just prefer the taste of spring water and I drink a ton of water every day. Although, I am very picky about even spring water. I don't like Evian and Ozarka, for example.
Hormones are my big issue with organic milk. I just graduated from UT with a BS in biology, so let me break this down biology-style for you guys. Bovine growth hormone does not bind to human growth hormone receptors, as everyone seems to think, so growth hormone itself does nothing directly. However, injecting cattle with bovine growth hormone increases their insulin growth factor (IGF) production, and bovine IGF does bind to human IGF receptors. IGF has been shown over and over again to be over-expressed in just about every human cancer, and giving in to rodents gives them cancer as well. The reason that injecting cattle with growth hormone isn't completely illegal is because it hasn't been "proven" that ingesting large quantities of IGF will cause cancer in humans because the study that would be needed is extremely unethical. However, it is obvious to anyone who understands the molecular biology behind it (and most people don't) that if you don't drink organic milk you are giving yourself cancer. Bottled water, however, is a scam.
Ha Ha! I just found out that our resident biologist/organic milk supporter is my GF that I was talking about when I started this thread. She never went that far with me, she just told me that I have to by Organic milk or we'll get cancer. Well, you guys didn't help my argument, but that's good. I am more convinced now. It sounds like there are a few other Organic converts on the board as well. Even though it kind of makes me want to stop drinking milk alltogether.
God willing, we will prevail, in peace and freedom from fear, and in true health, through the purity and essence of our natural... fluids. God bless you all. I find it extremely amusing that, in the US, bottled water costs more per gallon than gasoline. But nobody b****es about that. Bottled water is one of the, if not the most, wasteful uses of a widely available resourse that there is. Think "big picture". Think of the amount of energy used cleaning, bottling, transporting, recycling, etc...the little bottles of Evian or whatnot, which is debatably cleaner than regular tapwater (for us lucky westerners), and for which we have a pretty efficient public delivery system. But then again, I'm sitting in a place where water, coke, and a whole list of liquids cost quite a bit more than beer, so I really don't give a ****.
I bought some horizon milk forthe first time tonite... I must say that is some good milk. It is sweeter and seems smoother.
Bah, talking on a cell phone can cause cancer. [sarcasm]Just living can cause cancer[/sarcasm]. I have drunk regular milk or 2% milk for close to 31 years and I always drink it in the morning with my breakfast.
This is simply untrue when talking about real spring water. Tap water is high in copper and iron contamination, for example, while spring water is high in calcium and magnesium, two beneficial nutrients that don't really exist in tap. As an unbiased example, conservation labs never use tap water due to the contamination factor. Either they have their own advanced water filtration system, or bottled spring water is used. Again, though, my preference is based on taste (when at restaurants I drink tea - this is obviously made with tap water but it tastes like tea so I don't care). Ridicule if you will of course.
