I didn't say he was a 4, but that, "Both Outlaw and Barnes are athletic as hell. I'd love to get Outlaw and Jack, but are they worth Battier? A better question might be, is Jack a real upgrade, starter quality, over Alston, and is Outlaw any more of a 4 than Barnes, that could play major minutes there?" I'm one of the first people here that tend to get irritated at the obsession with stats when comparing players, past and present, but I think it is worthwhile when comparing players with this little experience in the league, both of whom are mentioned as guys we might pick up. Do we need a big increase in athleticism on the Rocks? Yes. All three of these guys fit that description. As for Barnes being soft on defense, I didn't notice it while watching the Warriors in the Playoffs. He's not Battier on D, obviously, and not a lot of players are, but I wasn't proposing trading Battier for him. Outlaw is all about the "P" word. Maybe he becomes a borderline star, and maybe he becomes a Griffin or Swift. As for Jack, I haven't seen enough of him to know jack about the dude.

Again, where did I say Barnes is someone we should get as our 4? He's an athletic swingman who can play the 4 based on matchups. He shoots from long range much better than Outlaw, which is a plus. Again, he is not, nor have I ever said he was, an answer for the Boozers of the league. No one on the Rocks was an answer for him. Barnes upgrades our bench and gives Adelman more options. Is he worth the MLE? That's certainly open for debate. I'm not sure he is, but he's not chopped liver, either.

I'm all for trading Battier. He's an average role player who steps in and takes charges. I appreciate his hustle and effort but the Rockets can do much better.

I'm not saying that Outlaw and Jack aren't good players, but they don't strike me as players that can get us "over the hump". Do I view Barnes as that player? Of course I do. He made me a believer during the season when he started for the Warriors. He doesn't fill an EXACT need or position the Rockets have (i.e. point guard or power forward), but he can fill another need the Rockets have--a 6th man that can come in and be a spark plug.

He can spell McGrady at shooting guard and is athletic and has enough size to play the small forward spot. Hell, he's not that bad of a ball handler either. In other words, he can be our "do-all" player. If I had to compare him to any player that Adelman has coached, it would probably be Doug Christie but with a lot more offensive skills.

Maybe he'll have to leave Houston forever

I love Shane, I love his hustle, I know he's great temmate but I really think we can get better player for him...and if we could do that it would be great

Why not just get Outlaw,Jack and Randolph for shane, howard, sura, head and 1st rd pick? Sign outlaw for 5mil per plus randolph 10m and Jack rookie deal puts you at 16 for Shane at 5.8,howard at 7,sura at 3, and head gives you the money. jack, tracy, outlaw,Randolph, and Yao with snyder, rafer, mle player,novac,v-span off the bench? make it happen.

I see what you're saying but what i'm getting at is that Outlaw is a free agent too. It's not like we HAVE to trade Battier in order to get him. When I read your Barnes vs. Outlaw post I took it exactly as it appeared: Barnes vs. Outlaw. In that case, I like Outlaw better and that's not meant to belittle what Barnes has done on that impressive GS team but I just simply feel Outlaw is the real deal and is ready to explode.

He's not your typical "Has all the tools but is a complete bonehead" type of player either. There have been numerous interviews talking about how big of a gym rat he is, how hard he works and how he has the motor to succeed. I've watched him play a lot, I really like his versatility and upside. I think he's going to have a breakout year for whoever signs him.

For what it's worth...I did the Artest trade and signed Francis on 07 and the Rockets team beat the Western Confrence All Stars...now I tweaked the line up so Yao and Tracy didn't have to play each other but it was Duncan, Dirk, KG, Kobe, Nash vs. Yao, Artest, Battier, Tmac, Francis....I simulated the game and it went into 3 overtimes with the Rockets winning...and while it's just a game, the tendencies were a little uncanny...Francis driving it in on Duncan and KG...Tmac pull up 3...things that we gripe about and they failed in the game...however Yao did well against Duncan and Battier (scored 5) held KG...impossible in real life I know...but the game with it's formula believes that Rockets team could beat possibly the best starting 5 out of the west (Rocket players not withstanding)...just a thought...Artest Battier and Yao...two quicker forwards and a slower talented big man...I think that's all I want...no Rashard or Bibby or any other Max contract for a guy not really Max level...If we do the Artest trade...sign a guy like Darko or Moore...get Francis back for the min...we are set. Well at least according to videogames,

    That's what I've been saying.

    Battier: Team USA
Artest: All Star Calibur - although he'll never make it to the All-Star game
    Yao: All Star
    T-Mac: All Star
    Francis: Former All Star

This Rockets team would be virtually as good as any All-Star Roster assembled if they all played to their potential. Not only that but Artest and Battier are All Defensive Player of the Year type players. Battier was a candidate and Artest won the award. I don't see any reduction in defensive capability with this lineup. Then you get a bunch of good bench and role players and I think you really have something there.

I dont know about you guys, but I really like Jack and Outlaw. I feel those two could be really great guys on out team. Only thing though, Battier does have more value than just the two of them... They are still question marks I guess since they are so young. I have been a huge Jack and Outlaw fan though, so it kind of sucks!

You forgot Rafer Alston, who was supposedly the "dark horse candidate" for all-star.

I'm not convinced that Jack is the guy to run this team. He was benched several times by the Blazers last year, and for most of the season didn't play a lot in the 4th quarter. Outlaw is interesting, but is definitely not a 4. The blazers say they want him back, but they are also looking hard for a high caliber small forward. If they find one and can't find a good deal for Randolph or Miles, then I don't see them having the money and the minutes for Outlaw. But Outlaw still needs to come off the bench for another year. Defensively he's not ready to guard starting 3s all year.

I haven't read this whole thread, but

    Shane Battier + Juwan Howard

    for

    Zach Randolp + Jarret Jack

    works salary wise

I think that sounds reasonable, but there is a rumor that Richard Jefferson might be swapped for Randolph.

That'be actually be a pretty decent deal for both teams...never knowing what Randolph might do. If JVG was still our coach, I wouldn't want him.

To the extent that Shane is RJ lite, though a better defender, if that deal didn't go through I could see the Blazers having interest.

I'd throw in our #26 pick, to.

In essence, it'd be Rudy Gay + Stromile Swift + #26 pick this year for Randolph and Jarret Jack.

I would rather throw in Head than the 26th pick. I think there's going to be some very solid 2's and 3's to be had late in the first round this year.
