I don’t think it creates a gaping hole. You have Mcgrady, Snyder, possibly Wells, Webster or Outlaw. Plus, in the free agency market, there are plenty of quality swingmen available (Barnes, Pietrus, Morris Peterson, Noccioni, Desmond Mason, Luke Walton, James Posey, Michael Finley). Not to mention the possibility of getting Ron Artest on the cheap.

On the other hand, if you don’t make a trade for a point guard, I see a much bigger hole at the point, than there would be if we traded away Battier. And outside of maybe Maurice Williams, I do not see a single available point guard that would significantly improve our situation there any more than Jack would.

You have to take what is given to you, and what is given to the Rockets are a plethora of quality swingmen that can soften the loss of Battier, and very few point guards that will be significant upgrades to Alston.

First off, there is no argument a starting PG is our #1 need. But I guess you have a higher opinion of Jack than I do. Maybe he would be a "significant" upgrade; maybe not. Secondly, IF we obtain a suitable replacement for Battier, then I'm almost OK with this trade, but I think it's safe to say Bonzi is gone and Snyder is not an adequate replacement. None of the other guys you mention are much (if any) better than Shane.

It's a long offseason. I can hardly wait for the first move so we can dissect it.

I really like Battier on this team but I would have a VERY hard time not considering this offer of Battier for Jack and Outlaw. Both have upside off the charts and are 23-years-old and 22-years-old, respectively. You might think i'm overvaluing Jack and Outlaw but I really think under the right coaching you have the opportunity to trade one starter for two.

That is not a very good deal, I'm sure another one is going to come up that is better, but it looks like a sure thing that Battier will be traded.

So... what does everyone know about Jack?

I don't see "future star" potential on him... it also seems Portland doesn't see it, either. Reports are they are consider trading him for the 11th pick. He doesn't really seem to have the "PG of the future" tag on.

Rumors are Portland badly wants Conley Jr. I don’t think it reflects poorly on Jack that Portland would choose Conley over him. Conley is the more flashy player and of course, they wan to please Oden.

If Battier is worth an 8th pick in a bad draft, and Jack is worth an 11th pick in a great draft, that right there tells you their value is pretty close. Throw in a solid young player with a high ceiling (Outlaw or Webster), and I think it’s a good deal for the Rockets.

Not get rid of him. It's the only way to get better one a team where you have Yao, T-mac, and then....ummmmm......Shane Battier. Who are you going to use to make a trade?

I'd trade Battier for Jack/ T-Law in a heart beat. Jack is a very solid pg who's strong and knows how to run the offense and can penetrate as well. He just needs to keep working hard on his jumper. He's not going to be an All-Star but he would definitely add depth and is without a doubt an upgrade over Alston.

As for Travis Outlaw, I live in Portland and so I follow this guy pretty close as well. He improves every year and he shows flashes of brilliance and he just needs to be more consistent and find his niche. I think his ceiling is very high in terms of talent and he has the potential and work ethic to be a borderline star in the future. Added bonus he is the ultimate whats that phrase Drexler loves to use " Consummate professional" or other.

Martell Webster has been a bust thus far and he is really one dimensional especially when his jumper is not falling. He has the body advantage to post up smaller defenders and he should also be a better defensive player. Overall he's been a disappointment in his short career. He has time to turn things around and maybe a change of scenery to Houston would be good for him but if I were offered Outlaw and Jack I'm all over it. We would be getting 2 quality players both starter material, which means added depth, and most importantly YOUTH

Well, maybe a 3 and a 4 but they are similar in that they do the unappreciated dirty work.

the rockets and morey i'm sure love battier and what he brings to the court. but you have to keep in mind that he's the most valuable piece of trade bait we have. i'll move him in an artest or lewis deal but no way in that portland trade.

i really hope there is a way to improve the PG and PF spot w/o trading shane. unfortunately, it's much easier to find wingmen then bigs or points. if we need to trade shane then so be it. it will be sad but it's best for the team.

i like the portland trade. i agree with the rockets, that this trade didn't give us enough, but it's very close.

Umm...you've clearly never seen Corliss Williamson play before. He's a back to the basket, low post bruising small forward. Shane Battier is a perimeter shooter.

although to be fair, Battier actually has a very solid post game. It just never got used in JVG's system.

Hmn. Portland would probably rather have Battier/Howard for Jack/Randolph.

If Les were willing to foot the tab, I'd go for that, except Randolph and Yao occupy the same part of the floor.

Perhaps, but Corliss is known as probably the biggest, most physical small forward in the game (well atleast a few years ago). His whole game is punishing smaller guys inside. That's not Shane's game.
