Realistically, if thousands of people just started dropping off food randomely, the logistics of how to accept it and distribute it at the Astrodome would be a challenge in and of itself. Plus there would be no way to assure the quality or appropriateness of any of the food. If you want to donate food, you should donate to the Houston Food Bank and they'll accept and deliver the food.

    That's awsome!

People here in NY have no idea either. It baffles me. My taxi driver on the way to work today told me that he heard that there was a conspiracy to remove all whites from NO on Saturday and leave minorities there. When I asked him where he got this info, he said "look at the tv". When I explained the racial percentages in NO, he said that was impossible...how could they afford to live downtown?

Agreed...It's our human nature to survive by any means necessary...Survival is the objective there, but TV's, with no electricity for at least a couple of months, c'mon...They have to declare marshall law to restore some sort of order...What about all the prisoners they let go...holy crap...

Thanks for giving me the benefit of the doubt, Uprising.

I am ignorant of the fact that the majority of the looters being shown on TV were black.

I read this on Slate this morning:

This guy was writing about TV coverage, but it applies to print coverage as well.

If you don't live near Louisiana and have never visited NO, you don't really hear much about the poor minority population of NO in the mainstream press (Well, maybe Mother Jones, but that's barely mainstream).

The media portryal of NO is as a cultural hub and tourist destination. You see the annual local news coverage of NO's Mardi Gras and maybe a couple of Girls Gone Wild commercials, and that's it for the national awareness of NO. If you go through some of the tourism sites covering NO; you won't see pictures of a bunch of destitute black people.

Although my fights with Krofyah brought out a lot of namecalling on both sides (sorry about that), I'm glad to learn more about NO in the process.

I think looters should be shot. But to say that it's shocking and disgusting is just hilarious.

Society doesn't gives a crap about them, why should people expect them to give a crap about society?

High education level at average citizen maybe has something to do with their high taxes, so Germans can enjoy free education, even university. I certainly enjoyed it, even as a foreigner. Anarchy is normally triggered by major catastrophic events; however, it happens much more in very polarized societies. I think in situation like that, martial law should always be the first step, and military should be sent in right away. Lots of countries, developing or developed, have done that in the past. I am wondering why US didn't. If the troops were sent in right after the storm, maybe lots of looting, violence and tragedies could have been avoided.
