I don't know about historical trends. I can only speak from recent experience of working for NASA for the last 7 years. In that time, democrats in the house have taken aim at NASA's budget on a few occasions and the national republicans have tended to support the space program more vehemently.

But. I don't want to argue with the almighty Harrison Ford who I respect so much, so I will change my vote to this man...

for good reason too, what's NASA done in the past 20 years? 30 years?

besides the huge % of the fleet that's been destroyed, private competition would be good for them... go SpaceShipOne

Cuz the next step is Mars, and that is a lot bigger step than the moon.

Yao Ming sits up, and pokes the astroid from earth. Done.

Or in another universe, Chuck Norris bulks up, jumps from a spaceship (he doesn't need a space suit) and punches the astroid. It goes faster than the light of speed and goes forward in time and comes right back to earth, killing Chuck Norris.

In the five seconds when the astroid travelled through time, the world was too busy fighting World War V to notice and didn't have time to honour the astroid as the 'Norris killer'.

    Hey, this is another universe.

Spoken like someone who knows very little about the space program. Let me guess, you get all your NASA information from network news don't you?

How bout some odd 50 classified DOD payloads deployed? I think you and I are just a bit safer because of our space presence. DOD has some advanced capabilities up there that are not public knowledge.

And how bout the largest and most complex space station ever constructed? How bout a permanent human presence in space laying the groundwork for future exploration?

How bout multiple ground rovers and permanent orbiting spacecraft circling Mars?

I am not happy about NASA's preference of LEO in the past. But without the stepping stones and research of the last 20 years, we wouldn't be as close as we are today to establishing a moonbase and going to Mars within the next 15 years. It would be unthinkable.

I don't think you answered his question. First, the DoD point is irrelevant. He criticized manned space travel from NASA. DoD satellites and other space infrastructure have nothing to do with that. The same is true with rovers and satellites around Mars.

Second, in terms of stepping stones to developing a moonbase and a presence on Mars. The question is, what's the point of having a moonbase or a man on Mars, other than to marvel at our own technological prowess. I personally support NASA space travel but I like the fact that private groups are starting to compete with NASA because it encourages further innovation. For example, SpaceShipOne basically eliminated the need of having a heat shield because they developed a new method of gliding through the atmosphere that eliminates nearly all of the resistance that creates the superheated surface of the space shuttle. NASA could use some competition and I'm glad they finally have it.

There are quite alot more benefits to having a moonbase than to simply marvel at our technological prowess. Manned staging areas in space provides an exponential increase in our aerospace innovation and long term capabilities. Long term habitation of Mars is the goal. If you don't see how establishing a proving ground on the moon as a means towards that goal is beneficial, I don't know what to tell you.

No, the DOD point is extremely relevant. Firstly, he didn't specify manned space travel. He said when talking about NASA's budget, and I quote, "for good reason too, what's NASA done in the past 20 years? 30 years?"

When I said over 50 DOD payloads deployed, I am talking deployed by NASA. DOD satellites and other space infrastructure have quite alot to do with NASA because NASA has placed and services quite alot of them. Even though DOD is not as dependent on NASA as they were in the 80's, they still require NASA's assistance on a regular basis. Hell, DOD is the primary heavy user of TDRSS, even moreso than ISS and shuttle.

Umm. Just who do you think designs, builds, launches, and commands those rovers and satellites?
