Interesting piece... the good news is that the racist appeals get more cryptic and the receptive audience narrows as time goes by...
Yes, his campaign has on multiple occasions http://firstread.msnbc.msn.com/archive/2008/10/10/1529529.aspx McCain at 3rd presidential debate: Let me just say categorically I'm proud of the people that come to our rallies.
But to say that McCain has defended racial slurs (admitted he slipped loosely on the "Arab" comment by crazy red-shirt lady) and defended death threats against Obama....is a reach imo.
He or his campaign defended the people making those comments. Add to that the time his campaign staffer did the right thing and stopped people who pushing false rumors and hate. The video was even posted here. That was all good, but when CNN wanted to talk with the man who stopped them the McCain campaign hushed it all up and wouldn't let the man who was a Muslim appear. When Obama points out people are their rallies calling him a terrorist and threatening to kill him, and his campaign responds by saying it was a cheap shot of Obama to attack those that attend the McCain/Palin rallies, then they are defending that behavior.
