We need room next year for Donatas and 2 or 3 first round picks. Maybe even a 2nd rounder if we buy one, or Llull. Anybody we sign now will have to get cut later.
Do you know what the date is that they have to be signed in order to be on the Play-off roster? Isn't that date tomorrow?
There was a rumor floating around that Von Wafer might get waived. I would love to see the Rockets pick him if he does get cut.
Pretty sure that's incorrect. The rule is that guys need to be waived before date X (this season it's 3/23 I believe) in order for them to be playoff eligible. So had the Nuggets waited a little longer to buy-out Ronny Turiaf, he wouldn't have been playoff eligible and thus it would have made little sense for the Heat to sign him. There's still lots of time for us to pick up a player or two from the D-League or overseas.
With Martin probably out for a few more weeks, I sincerely hope Morey will get a SG because Bud playing minutes at the 2 & 3 spot is not going to cut it come playoff time.
i still think that we need another solid off the bench contributor coz of the uncertainty of Lowry and Martin...we don't know if either of them can return or both would be shut down.
Shortened season = less revenue. From an owner's standpoint, why pay 2 guys to sit at the end of the bench and collect a paycheck + per diem, hotel expenses etc if they are not part of the future of the team. I'm sure if there we two guys out there with substantial potential for development then they would be willing to eat the cost. Since there isnt, there's no need to sign two guys just to fill out the roster. Another aspect is practice time in this condensed schedule. Usually, having a full 15 guy roster is beneficial because if the last guys on the bench arent playing in the games, they are at least contributing in practice and allowing you to have 3 sets of 5 to rotate in scrimmages. But, since there is hardly any time to practice this isn't as important this late in the season.
Doubt Les Alexander is that cheap. Salary for a couple of minimum wage guys for the rest of the season= $300-400K. The team spend $2million to $3 million buying 2nd around picks quite routinely. More likely that the Rockets spoke with the agents for a couple of the other higher profile waiver guys (Diaw, Turiaf, etc.-- HOU was reported to have reached out to Patty Mills but he decided to join the Spurs, pending work visa issues) that decided to go to other teams either because of a better chance of winning a title or more available minutes (Diaw, for example, was pressed into action by the Spurs right after he signed). Meanwhile, they might be waiting to see the complete list of available waiver guys before deciding what to do. Players who spent time on an NBA roster this season must be waived by midnight Eastern on Friday (i.e. roughly 5.5 hours ago) in order to become playoff eligible. Rasul Butler, for example was waived by Toronto right before the midnight deadline. Not sure if anyone else was. In any case, players waived by midnight Friday will stay on waiver for 2 days before becoming free agents. So, we should be hearing some news on the signing front within the next 48 hours-- either the Rockets will sign someone coming off waiver, or they will pick up someone in the Courtney Fortson position-- i.e. not on an NBA roster.
